The fate of M-Tex Oil now hangs by a thread following a critical decision by its leader, Cami Miller. In the pivotal eighth episode of Landman Season 2, titled “Handsome Touched Me,” Cami rejected the safe legal route and committed the company to a risky $400 million drilling gamble. This choice sets the Texas oil company on a dangerous path, with financial analysts and a major investor predicting it could lead to bankruptcy within three years.
The episode, which premiered on January 4, 2026, on Paramount+, reveals that the company’s primary investor, Dan Morrell (Gallino), structured his deal to profit regardless of M-Tex’s survival. With only a 10% chance of success for the drilling project, nearly everyone at M-Tex believes Cami has made a catastrophic mistake.
Cami’s High-Stakes Gamble: Drilling Over Safety
Faced with a critical choice for M-Tex’s future, Cami Miller chose a path of extreme risk. The company’s offshore natural gas rig in the Gulf of Mexico was damaged, and her advisors presented two options: sue the insurance company for a payout or spend $400 million to rebuild the rig and drill again.
During a tense meeting, geologist Charlie confirmed the grim odds. He explained that the original drill site likely hit only a small pocket of gas. Drilling again to find a larger reservoir had a mere 10% chance of success. The company’s lawyer, Rebecca, and legal advisor, Nate, strongly urged Cami to take the safer litigation route. Even Tommy Norris, her most trusted fixer, warned her she was trading “a sure thing for a maybe”.
However, Cami was determined to prove her worth as a business leader, not just as the widow of founder Monty Miller. She turned to Charlie and gave the final order.
“My word will be worth something,” Cami stated firmly in the meeting. “Go find it”.
This decision to “wildcat,” or gamble on a long shot, means M-Tex will spend the massive investment from Gallino. Cami believes hitting gas could bring in billions instead of the millions a lawsuit might secure. Tommy later confronted her, offering once more to simply sell the company so she could retire in wealth. Her response was clear: “I don’t want cabana boys. I want success. Get that for me”.
Gallino’s Royalty Scheme: A Plan to Profit From M-Tex’s Failure
While Cami dreams of a legendary strike, her financial backer has built a trap. After Cami’s decision, Tommy raced to the office of investor Dan Morrell, also known as Gallino, played by Andy Garcia. Tommy revealed the 10% success rate, hoping Gallino would pull his $400 million and stop the project.
Gallino’s response shocked Tommy. He revealed he did not give M-Tex a simple loan. Instead, he invested in the company in exchange for royalties on M-Tex’s land leases. According to his calculations, those royalties would earn him about $300 million per year, regardless of the company’s daily operations.
Most chillingly, Gallino explained that his contract is structured so that he continues to get paid even if M-Tex goes bankrupt and its assets are sold to another company. He is completely insulated from the risk.
Gallino openly told Tommy that he expects M-Tex to fail within three years or less. He suggested this might even be better for Cami, who could then retire comfortably with her trust fund while he continues collecting checks.
Tommy realized the horrible truth: Gallino wins whether the drill hits gas or not. The deal ensures that if the company collapses, Gallino will be the one who profits most from its remains.
Personal Fallout: Broken Trust and Family Strains
The business crisis triggered major personal conflicts within the M-Tex circle. The most immediate rupture was between Rebecca and Charlie. Rebecca was furious that Charlie’s technical advice had encouraged Cami to make what she saw as a reckless choice. She ended their budding romantic relationship on the spot.
Charlie fired back with a painful personal attack. “If you cut people off when they don’t do as you say,” he told her, “what a lonely woman you’re gonna be”. The remark hit its mark. Later, on the company jet, a subdued Rebecca admitted to Tommy, “What he said is true, and it hurt”.
Meanwhile, Tommy dealt with family pressures. His father, T.L., suffered a fall in the family pool, struggling with arthritis and despair. In an unorthodox move, Tommy hired a stripper named Cheyenne to act as T.L.’s physical therapist, believing his stubborn father would only cooperate with a pretty woman. The plan worked, symbolizing a fragile healing in their relationship.
In a lighter subplot, Tommy’s wife, Angela, took seniors from a local retirement home to a casino. Using $10,000 of Tommy’s money, she proceeded to win over $300,000, proving her own unique capabilities.
