Lanterns Episode 5, titled Lights Out, delivered the most devastating chapter of the HBO series yet, wrapping up the show’s entire 2016 timeline with a wave of shocking deaths that left Rushville, Nebraska in ruins. The episode confirmed Zoe Macon (Poorna Jagannathan) as the Manhunter, pitted Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) against each other, and killed off three major characters while claiming countless civilian lives.
The episode premiered on HBO Max on September 14, 2026, and has been described by multiple outlets as feeling like a season finale despite three episodes remaining.
Zoe Macon Was the Manhunter
The biggest revelation of Episode 5 was confirming that Zoe Macon, the wealthy rancher’s wife who had been a central figure in Rushville for decades, was actually the last surviving Manhunter. The Manhunters were created by the Guardians of the Universe before the Green Lantern Corps as an early peacekeeping force, but their brutal methods led the Guardians to try to shut them down. Zoe explained that she was the only one who survived the purge.
Zoe revealed that she had been living as a fugitive for years, embedding herself in alien societies, including that of Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor), with whom she was once in love. The two failed to conceive a child together, and her programming ultimately compelled her to bring justice through killing.
She also confessed to killing Abin Sur, Hal Jordan’s Lantern predecessor, out of fear that he would tell the Guardians about her. Abin Sur had captured her and was transporting her when his ship crashed near Rushville.
Zoe’s death came at the hands of John Stewart, who shot her with a sniper rifle after using Hal’s prone body as bait. Her final moments included a scene with her grandson Noah, where she urged him to “Remember everything I told you.”
William Macon Died at Antaan’s Hands
William Macon (Garret Dillahunt), Zoe’s husband and the leader of Rushville’s militia, met a gruesome end in Episode 5. Hal Jordan tricked Antaan and his alien crew into believing that Macon was the Manhunter, sending them to the Macon ranch.
Macon, coached by Zoe on the Manhunter’s language and backstory, attempted to impersonate the shapeshifting alien. However, Antaan saw through the deception. The vengeful alien killed Macon and cut out his human heart to confirm his identity, since a Manhunter’s heart crystallizes upon death.
Garret Dillahunt spoke about his character’s role in the episode, noting that Macon’s militia was actually assembled to protect Zoe from outside threats. In exchange for her advanced technology helping Rushville thrive, the townspeople agreed to protect her secret.
Antaan Was Thrown into the Sky
Antaan, the alien antagonist who had been hunting the Manhunter across the galaxy, also met his end in Episode 5. After murdering William Macon and realizing he had been deceived, Antaan turned his rage toward Hal Jordan.
In an attempt to kill Hal, Antaan activated an explosive device woven into his skeleton. Hal used his power ring to create a whirlwind construct that flung Antaan high into the air before he detonated, saving himself from the blast.
The episode provided significant backstory for Antaan, revealing through his confrontation with Macon that he and Zoe were once lovers who failed to have a child. Antaan had previously claimed that the Manhunter orchestrated a holocaust against his people, adding layers of tragedy to their conflict.
Rushville Citizens and Soldiers Died in the Crossfire
Beyond the three major character deaths, Episode 5 featured widespread casualties across Rushville. Innocent civilians caught in the crossfire between Will Macon’s militia and Antaan’s extraterrestrial forces lost their lives as the town descended into all-out warfare.
Zoe also used the laser satellite introduced in Episode 4 to destroy large portions of Rushville, decimating the very town she had called home for three decades. The satellite attacks reduced buildings to rubble and left the town in tatters, explaining why Rushville appeared partially destroyed in the show’s 2026 timeline.
Hal Jordan’s decision to orchestrate the conflict for his personal benefit directly contributed to civilian deaths. The review noted that Hal “decided to orchestrate a massacre for his personal benefit,” with his betrayal of John Stewart leading to widespread destruction across the town.

Following the carnage, John Stewart made a decision that shocked fans of Green Lantern lore. After killing Zoe and removing her heart to prove she was the Manhunter, John met with Guardian Lianna (Laura Linney) in a bar. He delivered Zoe’s heart to her, calling it “your sins, and consequences,” a direct reference to the Guardians’ role in creating the Manhunters.
John then turned his back on the Green Lantern Corps entirely, leaving the Power Ring on the table and walking away. The episode forced John to reject the Corps after witnessing the devastation, emerging “totally disillusioned with the Green Lantern Corps and the ideals they claim to represent.”
Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart, has described the series as a deeply human story despite its grim, mystery-driven tone. New episodes of Lanterns continue to air Sundays at 9pm on HBO Max, with the show’s 2016 timeline now complete and the narrative moving forward into 2026.
