Apple TV’s new thriller Last Seen dropped its first two episodes on September 9, 2026. The show follows Ian Ridley (Patrick Brammall), a former police detective turned emergency dispatcher whose three-year-old daughter Maggie vanished without a trace 11 years ago. By the end of Episode 2, Ian receives a phone call that changes everything. The show’s creator Kris Mrksa recently explained why Ian still holds onto hope that his daughter might be alive.
The Phone Call That Gives Ian Hope
In the second episode, a teenage girl named Sarah (Chloe Jean Lourdes) calls emergency services and speaks to Ian. She tells him her name is Sarah, then adds “maybe it’s Mags”. “Mags” was Ian’s nickname for his missing daughter. Ian immediately tells her he is her father and rushes to find her. But when he reaches the phone booth, she is already gone.
Before this call, Ian had spent 11 years believing Maggie was dead. A child’s remains were found near Port McKenna, and Ian found his daughter’s clothing item nearby. But DNA results revealed the remains did not belong to Maggie. This meant there was a chance Maggie could still be alive.
Creator Explains Ian’s Hope
Kris Mrksa, who created the series and serves as executive producer, spoke with TV Insider about Ian’s mindset. He explained that Ian has always held onto hope, even when the situation looked hopeless.
“I think that Ian has, at some level, always just clung to this hope that she was going to come back to him. That’s his lifeline. I mean, the guy’s life imploded, it spiraled out of control, and that is the thing that he’s hung onto.”
Mrksa also said Ian really wants to believe Maggie is alive. When he gets the call, he immediately believes it could be her. Even though Ian knows he should be more rational, the hope of finding his daughter has kept him going for so long that this small sign makes him become almost obsessed with the idea that Sarah is actually Maggie.
The Mystery Behind Sarah
The show reveals that Sarah is living with Henry (Brendan Cowell) and Jenna (Maxine Peake) on an isolated farm. They have kept her away from the outside world with an alarm system on their property. Sarah has very little experience of normal teenage life. She believes Henry and Jenna are her parents.
But Sarah starts getting pieces of her past back. She finds a flyer about a vigil for Maggie and remembers the name “Mags”. She starts wondering if she could be the missing girl. After sneaking out and getting drunk at a party, she remembers carving “Mags” into a log. This memory leads her to make that emergency call.
Mrksa told TV Insider that the question of whether Sarah is really Maggie is “part of the mystery”.
“It’s part of the mystery, what’s really on there, how this circumstance arose, how these two men’s lives have intersected in a way that is part of the overall mystery for the show.”
He added that at a certain point, it becomes clear who Sarah really is. Then the story becomes less about who she is and more about how it happened and why.
Another Twist: Henry and Ian Are Connected
The second episode ends with another twist. It is revealed that Henry and Ian are not strangers. Henry knew Ian from before. This connection adds another layer to the mystery. Mrksa said the show explores how these two men’s lives became connected.
What Happened to Maggie 11 Years Ago
The series reveals that Ian blames himself for what happened to Maggie. On the night she disappeared, Ian and Maggie’s mother went out dancing and left her home with her older half-brother Dean, who was 16 at the time. Ian has never forgiven himself. His life fell apart after that night. He is now divorced, six months sober, and still struggling with guilt.
