Actor Lee Yi Kyung recently shared a story about his early career and the reaction of his father to his debut role in the queer-themed film White Night. The actor appeared on the YouTube show “Zzanbro,” hosted by comedian Shin Dong Yup, where he recounted the challenges he faced at home when entering the entertainment industry.
A Controversial Debut
Lee Yi Kyung debuted in 2012 with White Night, directed by Lee Song Hee Il. The film tells the story of Tae Joon, played by Lee Yi Kyung, and his passionate encounter with a flight attendant. This role became a point of contention with his family, particularly his father.
Father’s Disapproval and Demand
Lee Yi Kyung revealed that he hadn’t informed his parents about the film’s theme beforehand. His father, known to fans as a former C-suite executive in the LG conglomerate, was shocked upon discovering the nature of his son’s role.
I was shooting a queer-themed movie without having told my parents. So when my father found out about it and read the part of the script about my character having sex with another man, it was absolute chaos.

Upon learning about the character, Lee Yi Kyung’s father demanded that he immediately stop filming and return home.
He called me when I was on set and asked if I was taking part in a movie called White Night. He told me to drop everything and come home… He was willing to cover all the costs of taking the production down.

Overcoming Obstacles
While Lee Yi Kyung didn’t share specific details about the ensuing confrontation, he mentioned asserting his independence as a grown man who had completed his military service. Ultimately, he managed to continue with the project. Given his successful acting career following White Night, it’s clear that he eventually gained his parents’ support for his chosen path.
