What Happened in the Previous Episode: Season 1 Finale Recap
The first season of Magical Girl Raising Project ended with a brutal finale that left only one survivor. To understand where Restart picks up, here is a detailed breakdown of how each major character’s story concluded.
Snow White (Koyuki Himekawa)
Snow White began the series as an idealistic magical girl who wanted to help people. By the finale, she had lost nearly everyone she cared about, including her closest ally La Pucelle. In Episode 12, she tried to reason with the remaining magical girls, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
When Fav, the game’s administrator, offered her the chance to become the new Master and run the next selection process, Snow White rejected him. Instead, she rushed to save Ripple from Swim Swim. After the final battle, Snow White emerged as the sole survivor and winner of the game. In the end, she chose not to quit being a magical girl. Instead, she began training with Ripple to become stronger, determined never to stand by helplessly again.
Ripple
Ripple was a fierce and skilled fighter who lost her partner Top Speed early in the game. Her rivalry with Swim Swim reached its breaking point in the finale. The two engaged in a duel to the death in the rain, with Swim Swim using her water-based abilities to evade Ripple’s attacks.
Fav gave Ripple a crucial hint about Swim Swim’s weakness, telling her to focus on “light and sound.” Ripple used a flashbang grenade to expose Swim Swim’s true form and killed her. However, Ripple lost an eye and an arm in the fight and collapsed from blood loss shortly after, leaving Snow White as the official winner. Despite her injuries, Ripple survived and continued working as a magical girl alongside Snow White, training her to fight.
Swim Swim
Swim Swim was the antagonist of the final arc. She was a child-like magical girl who took over Ruler’s group after Ruler’s death. Swim Swim believed she was following Ruler’s wishes, but her understanding of Ruler’s intentions was deeply flawed.
In the finale, Swim Swim fought Ripple in a desperate battle. Her ability to transform into water made her nearly untouchable, but Ripple exploited her weakness to light and sound. Swim Swim was killed by Ripple’s flashbang grenade, ending her reign of terror.
Fav
Fav was the mascot-like administrator of the Magical Girl Raising Project game. Throughout the series, Fav presented himself as a neutral observer, but his true nature was revealed in the finale. Fav explained that the game’s purpose was to select a worthy candidate to become a true magical girl for the Land of Magic. He attempted to recruit Snow White as the new Master, but she rejected him and destroyed his terminal. Despite the destruction of his terminal, Fav’s influence lingered, setting the stage for the Restart arc.
La Pucelle
La Pucelle was Snow White’s closest friend and ally. She was killed by Cranberry during the middle of the season, and her death was the catalyst for Snow White’s transformation from a passive observer to an active fighter. La Pucelle’s memory continues to drive Snow White’s determination to become stronger.
Sister Nana and Winterprison
Sister Nana and Winterprison were a couple who participated in the game together. Sister Nana believed she could find a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but her efforts failed. Both characters died during the course of the season, with Sister Nana’s death being particularly tragic as she was killed by Swim Swim after trying to reason with her.
Cranberry
Cranberry was the strongest magical girl in the game and a former winner of a previous selection process. She served as an enforcer for the Land of Magic and killed multiple participants, including La Pucelle. Cranberry was eventually defeated by a combined effort from several magical girls, but her actions left a lasting impact on the survivors.
Calamity Mary
Calamity Mary was a violent and unstable magical girl who enjoyed causing chaos. She was killed during the game, but not before causing significant damage to the other participants.
Ruler
Ruler was the leader of a group of magical girls who tried to hoard Magical Candies. She was killed by Swim Swim, who then took over her group. Ruler’s death marked a turning point in the game’s power dynamics.
