The supernatural mystery anime MAO continues its weekly run with episode 19 arriving this Saturday. Based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi, the series has been building its dark fantasy narrative since its April premiere. Episode 19 is the next installment in the second cour of this 26-episode season.

The English dub for MAO is scheduled to premiere on Hulu starting August 24, 2026. Currently, new episodes are released with English subtitles.

Episode 18 Recap: Natsuno
Episode 18, titled “Natsuno” (夏野), aired on August 1, 2026. The episode introduced a new character to the story.
Natsuno, a senior disciple of the Mikage family, appeared before Mao and Nanoka. She revealed important details about the past of Daigo (Mao’s senior disciple) and Sana. This provided key background information connecting to the larger mystery surrounding the Goko clan.
Meanwhile, Kamon, who has been pursuing Shiranui, joined Mao in investigating the source of hair emerging from a shrine at the bottom of the sea. To uncover the truth, they performed a ritual called “tama-oroshi” (soul descent).
The episode also showed Kamon discovering that Shiranui had moved his shrine to the bottom of the sea.
The Story of MAO
MAO is set in two eras. Mao is a young onmyoji living in Japan’s Taisho period (early 1900s). He has been cursed and has survived for 900 years. Nanoka Kiba is a junior high school girl from modern-day Japan (Reiwa era). She was the sole survivor of a fatal accident that killed her family when she was young.
One day, Nanoka walked through the gate of the shopping arcade where the accident occurred and found herself transported to the Taisho era, a world overrun with ayakashi (supernatural spirits). There she met Mao, who immediately recognized that she was not an ordinary human.
Both Mao and Nanoka share the same curse. Together, they work with the Mikage family disciples—Hyakka and Kamon—to confront the连锁 curses that threaten both their worlds.
The series is produced by Sunrise and directed by Teruo Sato. Yuko Kakihara handles series composition, Yoshihito Hishinuma is the character designer, and Shu Kanematsu composes the music.
