Margot Robbie has made a quiet change to her legal name almost a decade after marrying British film producer Tom Ackerley. The 36-year-old actress is now listed as Margot Elise Ackerley in corporate documents filed with the UK’s Companies House for LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company she runs with her husband. The filing, received on Monday and published Tuesday, records the change from Margot Elise Robbie to Margot Elise Ackerley. Robbie is expected to keep using her maiden name professionally for screen credits and public appearances.
What the Records Show
The name change appears in official paperwork for LuckyChap Entertainment, the company Robbie co-founded in 2014 with Ackerley and their friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. Robbie had been listed as Margot Elise Robbie since she became a director of the company in May 2015. The updated filing now shows her married surname.
There is no indication that Robbie plans to appear in film credits as Margot Ackerley. She was still credited as Margot Robbie for her recent project Sterling Point, the coming-of-age drama she co-produced through LuckyChap, which premiered on August 5.
A Private Change After Nearly 10 Years of Marriage
Robbie and Ackerley married in an intimate ceremony in Byron Bay, Australia, in December 2016. Their 10th wedding anniversary is just two months away. The couple met in 2013 on the set of the World War II drama Suite Française, where Robbie starred and Ackerley worked as an assistant director. They became friends, then roommates, before their relationship turned romantic.
The pair welcomed their first child, a son, in October 2024. They have largely kept their personal life out of the public eye. Robbie once spoke about Ackerley in a 2016 interview with Vogue, saying she had not expected to fall in love with him.
“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me,” she told the outlet. “We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back.’”
LuckyChap’s Growing Slate
Robbie and Ackerley launched LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014. The company has backed major projects including I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Promising Young Woman, Barbie and Saltburn. LuckyChap also has several projects in the works, including a live-action version of The Sims, an Ocean’s Eleven prequel directed by Bradley Cooper, and a Sleepy Hollow adaptation starring Sydney Sweeney.

The name change sparked debate on social media. Some fans questioned why Robbie would use a different surname when her name has become a global brand.
“Why would you do that when your name is your brand,” one person wrote on X.
Another commented, “Changing your name as a well-known celebrity feels like a bad business decision”. One Barbie fan declared, “Barbie would never take a man’s surname”.
Others defended Robbie’s choice. “Happy for her taking his name on her own timeline is a solid move,” one supporter wrote. Another added, “Ten years is crazy to think about but honestly good for her, married name fits her vibe way better than Robbie ever did”.
