The newest Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, delivered one of its most intense episodes yet on Sunday, May 3. Episode 10, titled “Playing with Fire,” threw the team into complete chaos after a prison transport bus crashed in the Montana wilderness. The accident set off a full-scale manhunt and forced Kayce Dutton to face a ghost from his family’s violent past. At the same time, Belle Skinner had to confront her own painful family history when a prisoner turned out to be her estranged mother. The episode ended on a major cliffhanger with a dangerous fugitive threatening to expose the Duttons’ darkest secrets.

A Deadly Crash and a Desperate Manhunt
The trouble started when a rockslide caused a prison bus to crash. The accident left a guard and the driver dead. Three high-risk prisoners took the opportunity to escape in different directions. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his team quickly split up to track down the fugitives across the rugged Montana terrain.
Among the escaped inmates was a man named Neil Lamb (Sterling Jones). When Kayce heard the name, he knew immediately this was not just any criminal. Neil was a former ranch hand at the Yellowstone. He carried the Dutton brand on his chest, marking him as someone who once belonged to the family’s operation. More importantly, Neil knew secrets about the Duttons that could ruin Kayce’s life if they ever came out.
Kayce tracked Neil down in the freezing mountain woods. But instead of begging for mercy, the prisoner tried to make a deal. Neil promised to stay silent about everything he knew if Kayce would help him escape across state lines. The offer put Kayce in an impossible position. If he let Neil go, the threat would still exist. If he brought Neil in, the man could talk to prosecutors.

Kayce Comes Close to Becoming His Father
The tension reached its peak when Kayce raised his gun. For a moment, he seriously thought about ending the problem the way his father John Dutton would have. Neil seemed to read Kayce’s mind and spoke directly to that struggle.
“Even as a boy, you were a different sort of man than your father. You don’t have to solve this problem the way he would.”
Before Kayce could decide whether to pull the trigger, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) arrived on the scene. Cal stopped Kayce just in time, leaving Neil alive for now. The episode ended with a “To Be Continued” title card. Next week, Kayce, Cal, and Neil will all get trapped together in a deadly blizzard on the mountain.

Belle’s Mother Is a Prisoner on the Bus
While Kayce hunted Neil, Belle (Arielle Kebbel) stayed behind at the crash site with the injured prisoners. One of the female inmates, Samantha (Brenda Strong), had been staring at Belle the whole time. The reason soon became clear: Samantha is Belle’s mother.
The show finally explained Belle’s mysterious past. Her family once owned a mine in her hometown. Samantha ignored safety rules, and the mine eventually collapsed, killing several people. Belle’s father, who was the CEO, took the blame and paid the victims’ families. He later died by suicide, and Belle was the one who found his body. Belle has always believed her mother played the victim to save herself while letting her husband take the fall.
Samantha suffered life-threatening injuries during the prison bus crash. Belle had to help save her mother’s life right there on the bus. A doctor who was also a prisoner guided Belle through the emergency medical steps. Watching Belle treat her mother’s wounds while holding onto years of anger made for some of the most emotional scenes of the entire series.
Garrett Gets Trapped in a Barn Fire
The episode also brought serious danger closer to home. Garrett (Riley Green) has been settling into his role on the ranch. He even formed a connection with a wild mustang that belonged to Monica. Kayce and Dolly were quietly planning a birthday celebration for Garrett. But those plans shattered when screaming came from outside. Kayce looked out to see the barn completely on fire.
Garrett had rushed into the burning structure to save the horses. Explosions rocked the inside of the barn as Kayce ran toward the flames. He found Garrett trapped beneath a collapsed beam. Kayce managed to pull him out, but Garrett had already suffered second-degree burns and lung damage from the smoke.
Before losing consciousness, Garrett asked Kayce to pass along a message to Cal: “I’m sorry.” The apology hinted at a complicated history between the two men from their military days. Cal later told Kayce that having Garrett around was “more complicated than you know.” The show kept the full story hidden for now, but the emotional weight was clear.
Cal Warns Miles About Love and the Job
On the fugitive hunt, Miles (Tatanka Means) put himself in danger while saving a young hostage. Afterward, Cal gave Miles a serious reality check about relationships. Cal explained that this job tears apart anything real a person has with their partner. He spoke from experience, mentioning his own failed relationship with Maddie’s mother.
Cal asked Miles whether he would hide things from Maddie or tell her everything about the dangerous situations he faces. Miles finally responded, “So I’m screwed no matter what I do.” The conversation left both men realizing there are no easy answers when love and law enforcement mix.
Andrea (Ash Santos) also returned to field duty in this episode after recovering from previous injuries. The team gave her a round of applause when she arrived back at work. But her first assignment back turned out to be escorting some of the most dangerous criminals, including a rapist and three convicted killers. Andrea also shared a morning kiss with Garrett, suggesting a new romantic connection is forming between them.

Secrets Put the Whole Team at Risk
The episode made it clear that no one on the team can escape their past. Belle spent years building an ordered life as a U.S. Marshal. She has put countless criminals behind bars. But now the criminal sitting in front of her is her own mother. Samantha noticed Belle’s hesitation and pushed gently. When Belle said allowing Samantha back into her life would be “messy,” her mother replied, “That wasn’t a no!”
Kayce faces an even bigger problem. Neil Lamb knows about the “Train Station,” the remote area near the Wyoming-Montana border where the Duttons have disposed of enemies’ bodies for generations. If Neil talks, the family’s history of violence could become public. Kayce left Yellowstone to escape that world and build something new. But this episode proved that leaving is not the same as being free.
