SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major plot details from the Matlock Season 2 finale.
The two-part Matlock Season 2 finale brought the Wellbrexa case to a dramatic close on April 23, 2026. Kathy Bates‘ Matty finally faced off against Beau Bridges‘ Senior in a tense elevator moment that changed everything.
The episode titled “Who Are You?” and “Matty Matlock” aired on CBS and is now streaming on Paramount+. The two-hour event wrapped up the opioid cover-up storyline that started in the very first episode.
After years of planning to take down the law firm responsible for her daughter Ellie’s death, Matty came to a critical decision. She wanted revenge, not just justice. The elevator scene between Matty and Senior showed how far she was willing to go.
The Moment Matty Made Her Choice
The elevator confrontation happened late in Episode 16. Matty and Senior spoke directly, and the conversation left her deeply unsettled. That moment only made her more determined to see him face real consequences for his actions.
Skye P. Marshall, who plays Olympia, called the finale “a war” at Jacobson Moore. She told TV Insider that Kathy Bates gives an award-worthy performance in these episodes.
The team faced multiple setbacks before getting to that elevator. In Episode 15, they discovered that Senior had been faking his dementia the whole time. He knew about everything from the start and controlled the situation while pretending to be sick.
How the Case Almost Fell Apart
When the team checked their evidence, they realized the Wellbrexa issue had been legally buried. The case they built for so long was no longer usable in court. Matty, Olympia, and Jason Ritter‘s Julian had to go through their files again to understand what options remained.
There was no direct evidence left. The team had to rebuild everything from scratch with only a few days left on the clock.
Olympia made progress connecting Senior to financial activity through a contact called The Wolf. Matty and Olympia later found out that multiple partners at the firm knew about the cover-up. This included Justina Machado‘s Eva, Senior’s ex-wife, and several other partners.
The Failed Wire and Matty’s Backup Plan
Julian tried to record Senior using a wire, but his father found it and removed it. The first attempt failed completely.
But Matty had already prepared for this exact situation. She planted another recording device on Senior earlier without anyone knowing. At the merger event, Gina Rodriguez‘s character Lida received the signal, and the FBI moved in.
Senior was arrested. Along with him, Eva, The Wolf, and several other partners were taken into custody. Julian was also implicated and arrested.
The Real Meaning Behind Matty’s Revenge
Jennie Snyder Urman, the show’s creator, explained why this revenge moment mattered. She told TheWrap that at an older age, people are capable of living beautiful new adventures, but they also have to be held responsible for what they did in their lives.
“That’s what Matty came in wanting, and that is what she gets now,” Urman said. She added that along the way, so many other things changed for Matty. Her life opened up, and she realized how much she loves being a lawyer again.
The showrunner called Julian‘s choice to help expose Senior his “hero arc.” She said Julian has always wanted to be a good person but previously chose to protect himself rather than doing the right thing. This time was different.
“This is a big moment for him, and it’s the moment when he finally defines and distinguishes himself as a different person than his father is, and proves it by making a selfless gesture in the name of justice and a greater good” – Jennie Snyder Urman, Matlock creator
What Happened After the Arrest
The final scene of the Matlock Season 2 finale showed Edwin answering the door when Sarah came in for a meeting. She crossed paths with a witness named Emmalyn. This suggests that Matty’s real identity may finally be revealed to more people.
But Matty gets to keep living as Matlock for now. Julian‘s arrest means her name stays out of the media. She can continue practicing law alongside Olympia without her real identity being exposed.
Urman told TheWrap that the show really wanted to dig into what Matty Matlock has meant to Madeline Kingston. The persona allowed her to access parts of herself she could not reach before.
“There’s a lot that she loves about how she was as Matlock that she’s not able to be as Kingston, and that felt really moving to us,” Urman explained.
