Apple TV+ has launched its new action-comedy Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. That question led to the creation of Nikolai Ustinov, an ex-KGB agent who has watched a bootleg copy of Top Gun hundreds of times.

Although the characters and events are fictional, the film’s setting is deeply connected to actual history. Mayday takes place in 1987, a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were still geopolitical rivals. The Cold War was nearing its end, but tensions remained high. The US and Soviet leaders had signed arms-control agreements to reduce nuclear weapons, yet distrust between the two superpowers continued.
The directors made a conscious choice to set the story in this specific period. They did extensive research to ensure the details felt authentic. Jonathan Goldstein explained that they looked into what technology would have been available during that time. For example, the Altai satellite phone that the characters use in the film was a real device. The filmmakers wanted the period details to hold up under scrutiny.
John Francis Daley grew up in the 1980s and drew on his personal memories while shaping the story. He recalled the pop culture of that era, including the music, fashion, and overall mood of the Cold War years. The film includes period-specific details like Cabbage Patch Dolls and songs from Van Halen and Bruce Springsteen.
Top Gun Obsession Drives the Story
One of the most interesting aspects of Mayday is how it connects to the 1986 film Top Gun. The directors were inspired by the success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and wanted to explore the iconic image of the Navy pilot hero. In the movie, Nikolai is obsessed with Top Gun and treats Troy like Maverick has just walked into his cabin.
Ryan Reynolds plays a character who has benefited from the fame that Top Gun brought to Navy pilots. Early in the film, Troy and his fellow pilots are treated like celebrities because of the movie’s impact on popular culture. The directors wanted to use Top Gun as a starting point to examine themes of patriotism, national identity, and what it means to face someone considered an enemy.

Filming Details and Production
The movie was filmed on location in Bulgaria, which was transformed to look like 1987 Russia. The production team used practical locations whenever possible, reserving special effects only for the most dangerous action scenes. The flight sequences received special attention. Producer David Ellison, who is also a pilot, went to great lengths to make sure the aerial scenes were accurate, even though the US military did not provide assistance.
The directors consulted with actual SR-71 Blackbird pilots and even spent time overnight on a US Navy aircraft carrier to understand the military world better. They wanted to get the details right, from how pilots land on carriers to how they take off.
Cast and Characters
Ryan Reynolds leads the cast as Lieutenant Troy Kelly. He brings his signature sarcastic humor to the role, similar to his performances in Deadpool and Free Guy, but with a more grounded approach. Kenneth Branagh plays Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent with a kind heart and deadly skills.
The supporting cast includes Maria Bakalova as Anna Ustinov, Nikolai’s estranged daughter. Marcin Dorociński plays Alexander Volkov, a rogue KGB agent who becomes a threat to the main characters. David Morse also appears in the film as Harold.
