The new Miami Vice movie is officially moving forward. Universal Pictures has confirmed that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler will star as the famous detective duo. The film now has a title, Miami Vice ’85, and a release date of August 6, 2027.
This version of Miami Vice will be different from the 2006 movie. The title suggests a return to the 1980s, the time when the original TV show became a huge hit.
Director Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, will direct the movie. He plans to shoot the film with IMAX cameras.
Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler Take Over Iconic Roles
Jordan will play Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. Butler will play Detective James “Sonny” Crockett.
The original series, which ran on NBC from 1984 to 1990, made stars out of Don Johnson (Crockett) and Philip Michael Thomas (Tubbs). The 2006 movie version starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Jordan recently won an Oscar for his work in the horror film Sinners. He also played in Creed, Black Panther, and Fruitvale Station. Butler received a Golden Globe for playing Elvis Presley in the 2022 movie Elvis. He also appeared in Dune: Part Two and Masters of the Air.
Joseph Kosinski, the director, told Variety last year, “Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices.”
Miami Vice 85 Movie Returns to the 1980s Setting
The title Miami Vice ’85 confirms that the story will take place in the mid-1980s. This is a major change from Michael Mann’s 2006 film, which was set in present day.
The movie will draw from the pilot episode and first season of the original TV series.
Plot details remain private. However, Universal has shared that the film will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami.” The original series set trends in fashion and music. The pastel suits, boat shoes, and synthesizer music from the show became famous around the world.
Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler, Andor) wrote the script. Eric Warren Singer worked on an earlier draft. Dylan Clark will produce alongside Kosinski.
Production and Release Details for Miami Vice 85
Production will begin later this year. The movie will release in theaters on August 6, 2027 in the United States. Release dates for other regions include August 4, 2027 in France and August 5, 2027 in Germany.
