Amazon MGM Studios has shifted the release strategy for its upcoming biographical sports drama “Madden,” starring Nicolas Cage as the legendary NFL coach and broadcaster. The film will now receive a limited theatrical run on November 11, 2026, one week earlier than initially planned, before debuting on Prime Video on November 18, 2026.
The decision moves the theatrical premiere up from the previously reported November 26 release window that had been circulating since the project’s first teaser dropped in December 2025. While the film will not receive a nationwide theatrical rollout, the limited November 11 release is specifically designed to qualify the movie for awards consideration.
Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker David O. Russell, “Madden” traces the life of John Madden, from his days as head coach of the Oakland Raiders through his legendary broadcasting career and his role in creating one of the best-selling video game franchises in history.
Prime Video Release Date and Streaming Details
“Madden” will premiere globally on Prime Video on November 18, 2026. The streaming debut comes just as the NFL season enters its critical stretch run, with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching. Amazon MGM Studios, which is backing the film, has scheduled the release to capitalize on peak football season viewership.
The film will first arrive in select theaters on November 11 for a limited awards-qualifying run. This strategy allows the production to meet eligibility requirements for major awards while still positioning Prime Video as the primary destination for general audiences. The film is not expected to receive a wide theatrical release in cinemas.
For viewers in the United States, Prime Video offers plans starting from $14.99 per month or $139 annually. The platform continues to expand its library with sports-related content, including biopics and documentaries covering athletes across multiple disciplines.
The Story Behind the Film
“Madden” chronicles the extraordinary journey of John Madden, who led the Oakland Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI and compiled a coaching record of 103-32-7 across ten seasons. After retiring from coaching in 1979, Madden spent three decades as a color commentator for NFL telecasts across all four major networks—CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC—earning 16 Sports Emmy Awards along the way.
The film also explores Madden’s collaboration with Electronic Arts in 1988, which resulted in the Madden NFL video game franchise, one of the best-selling game series of all time. According to the official synopsis, the movie is “the celebration of a brilliant mind whose once in a century spirit and personality, partnership with his daring wife Virginia, lifelong friendships, and infectious love of people and football transcended the world of sports”.
Russell framed the project’s ambitions when it was first announced in 2024, describing it as a story about “the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s”.
Cast and Characters
The film features an ensemble cast led by Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage in the title role of John Madden. Cage, who recently starred in “Spider-Noir,” takes on the physical transformation required to portray the larger-than-life football icon.
Christian Bale, another Academy Award winner, joins the production as Al Davis, the legendary owner and general manager of the Oakland Raiders. The friendship and partnership between Madden and Davis serves as one of the central relationships in the film.
The supporting cast includes:
- Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, John Madden’s wife
- Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, Al Davis’ wife
- John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins, founder of EA Sports
- Shane Gillis in an undisclosed role
- Joel Murray as Pat Summerall
The film is directed by David O. Russell from a screenplay he co-wrote with Cambron Clark. Producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, and Russell himself, with executive producers David Bloomfield, Constance Schwartz-Morini, and Michael Strahan. The production is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Skydance Sports, and NFL Films.

Awards Strategy and Streaming-First Approach
The decision to prioritize streaming over a wide theatrical release marks a significant shift in strategy for a film with such a high-profile cast and director. Russell carries serious awards pedigree as the filmmaker behind “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “The Fighter”. The limited theatrical run on November 11 is designed specifically to secure awards eligibility while the film’s primary distribution remains on Prime Video.
This approach reflects a growing trend in Hollywood, where major films are increasingly choosing streaming platforms over traditional nationwide theater releases. The strategy allows Amazon MGM to position “Madden” as one of Prime Video’s higher-profile awards-season offerings for the fall.
Production Background
The project has drawn attention not only for its star-studded cast but also for behind-the-scenes developments. Reports surfaced that several actors and crew members walked off set in May 2025 following an incident in which Russell allegedly used a racial slur and attempted to insert it into the film’s dialogue. The controversy adds another layer of scrutiny to a director already known for a history of on-set friction throughout his career.
Russell’s most recent feature, the 2022 period piece “Amsterdam,” was a costly box-office failure, taking in roughly $31 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. The streaming-first strategy for “Madden” may reflect a more cautious approach to distribution following that performance.
What to Expect
The film follows Madden’s full arc as a defining figure in American football, from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders through his transformation into one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting and the co-creator of a gaming empire. Early trailer footage has already drawn attention for Cage’s dramatic physical transformation into the role.
With its all-star cast, acclaimed director, and the fascinating life story of John Madden, the film has the ingredients to become one of the biggest sports movies of the year when it arrives on Prime Video this November.
