Episode 1 Recap: What Happened in UNFORGIVEN

Episode 1, titled “CHAPTER:1 UNFORGIVEN,” aired on October 6, 2026, and established the world of Keio Year 3, Hinomoto, Eido, a fictionalized version of Japan during the Bakumatsu era.

The episode opened with a dramatic Eternal Battle between Zetsu Ajara and a character named Kenzaki. Eternal Battles are deadly duels where samurai risk their lives, and the fight showcased Zetsu’s formidable skills as an Eternal Battler.

The main story followed Kū Bashin, a boy living at Bashin-in, a temple and shrine where his guardian Suiboku Bashin teaches local children the Standard version of Battle Spirits—a non-lethal card game that was growing in popularity among commoners.

A yearly festival at Bashin-in included a Standard Battle Spirits tournament. Kū advanced to the finals against his rival Ibuki Mizuha, the leader of the children learning at the temple. In the semifinals, Kū faced his childhood friend Yui Kusumoto, whose mother Mine cheered from the sidelines.

Before the final match, a group of rōnin caused trouble, demanding to see the shrine’s sacred object. A one-eyed samurai carrying a sword on his back appeared and drove them away. This was Zetsu Ajara, the legendary “Assassin Zetsu.” Intrigued by his presence, Kū invited him to watch the final battle.

The championship match between Kū and Ibuki took place in the Kaihō Ryōiki (Released Realm), a mysterious space accessed by opening a gate before the shrine’s sacred tree. During the battle, Zetsu observed Kū‘s performance and muttered that his “Soul Core is dead”—a cryptic remark that hinted at deeper mysteries.
