Noah Centineo, star of Netflix’s “The Recruit,” reveals the show’s surprising connection to real-life events. The series, which follows CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Centineo), draws inspiration from the experiences of former CIA attorney Adam Ciralsky, adding a layer of authenticity to its high-stakes espionage.

From Real Life to Netflix Drama

“The Recruit” plunges Centineo’s character into a world of international intrigue, from blackmail scandals to espionage operations. Centineo emphasizes the show’s believability, noting that the real-life stories behind the fiction are often stranger than anything imagined. “It’s funny. If it wasn’t so true, it would be absurdist. It walks that line. But it’s almost like — truth is stranger than fiction,” Centineo shared.

Ciralsky’s personal experiences heavily influenced the show’s narrative. Centineo explained, “There’s a lot in our show that is actually based in stories that Adam Ciralsky – who the show was loosely based off of – has told us.” This real-world connection grounds the drama, making the high-stakes situations feel plausible.

Balancing Suspense and Humor

Alexi Hawley, the show’s creator, skillfully balances suspense with humor, adding levity to critical moments. Centineo praised Hawley’s ability to navigate this “tightrope of drama and humor,” weaving them together seamlessly. “Right when it gets kind of dark and deep, he’s able to subvert that and make it funny again,” Centineo noted. This blend of tones keeps the show engaging and prevents it from becoming too serious.

The show also captures the feeling of constant danger and the toll it takes on its characters. Centineo described his character as “trying to survive in this bad world,” often running on little sleep. This realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by those working in intelligence adds to the show’s authenticity.

Filming at CIA Headquarters

Another factor contributing to the show’s realism is the rare opportunity to film at the CIA headquarters in McLean, Virginia. “They gave us clearance, which is insane. I think we were the first show to shoot at the new headquarters too,” Centineo revealed. This unprecedented access allowed the filmmakers to capture the actual setting, lending an undeniable authenticity to the series. Centineo’s prior visit to the headquarters for research made him feel strangely comfortable on set, further blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

“The Recruit” season 2 is available now on Netflix.
