The Esperia Kingdom Flashback Continues in Chapter 1185
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, started telling Brook’s backstory a few chapters ago. The flashback takes place in the Esperia Kingdom, around 70 years before the current story. It shows a young Brook who lived a very hard life.
Chapter 1184 showed Brook as a poor kid living in a junkyard. He had no family and barely any food. One day, he met a boy who would change his life forever. That boy was Prince Reuven, the future king of Esperia.
Reuven kept his identity a secret from Brook at first. The two became close friends. When marines beat up Brook for a crime he did not commit, Reuven stepped in to save him. He did not care that the marines had the World Government’s support.
After saving Brook, Reuven brought him to the palace. He gave the young boy an education, music lessons, and a place to live. This is why Brook always said he owed everything to Reuven.

What Happened in Chapter 1184
The previous chapter ended on a happy but tense note. After Reuven saved Brook, he ordered his men to enroll Brook in music school. The prince also made Brook a part of his personal royal unit.
But not everything was as it seemed. Candelle, the commander of the royal guard, said something very strange. She told Reuven, “I am your trusted hidden blade, your grace.” These words are the same ones used by Saint Sommers, a member of the God’s Knights who work directly under Imu.
This clue suggests that Candelle was never loyal to Reuven. She may have been working for the World Government the whole time.
The Connection Between Brook, Shuri, and the God’s Knights
The flashback also introduced a young Princess Shuri. She was Reuven’s daughter and Candelle’s child. Brook helped raise her and acted as her father figure.
But something terrible happened. According to what Brook said in an earlier chapter (1173), Shuri killed her own father. Brook yelled at her:
“I never wanted to think of you, for the rest of my life! Not the father-killing princess!! The life you stole away belonged to the man whom I owed everything to!”
After killing Reuven, Shuri went to the Holy Land of Marijoa. She later became a God’s Knight and now goes by the name Gunko. This explains why Brook had such a strong reaction when he first saw Gunko on Elbaph Island.
What Chapter 1185 Will Show
Chapter 1185 will likely move the story forward in several ways. It may show how Brook grew closer to Reuven over time. The chapter could also reveal why Candelle married Reuven and gave birth to Shuri.

Brook had eaten the Yomi Yomi no Mi devil fruit. This fruit allows its user to come back to life once after dying. When Brook died, his soul took one year to find his body. By then, his body had decayed down to a skeleton. Only his afro remained because his hair roots were very strong.
He spent 50 years alone on a ghost ship before meeting Luffy and the Straw Hats. His dream is still to reunite with Laboon at Reverse Mountain.
