The wait is finally over for Outer Banks fans. Netflix has confirmed the release date for the fifth and final season of the treasure-hunting drama. The streaming platform announced that Season 5 will premiere on August 20, 2026, with all 10 episodes available to watch immediately. This marks nearly two years since Season 4 premiered in October 2024.
The final season brings the story of the Pogues to a close. The show, which first launched in April 2020, has built a massive following over five seasons. Netflix revealed the premiere date alongside a teaser trailer and first-look images.
All 10 Episodes Release Together on August 20
Unlike Season 4, which Netflix split into two parts, Season 5 will drop as a complete batch. All 10 one-hour episodes will be available on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Netflix has moved away from the split-season model for most of its scripted shows. Outer Banks Season 5 follows this approach, letting viewers watch the entire final chapter at their own pace.
The episode count matches previous seasons. Each episode runs for about one hour, giving fans a total of 10 hours of content to finish the series.

Outer Banks Season 5 streams exclusively on Netflix worldwide. The show is a Netflix original series, so it will not be available on any other streaming platform.

The Story: Pogues Seek Revenge After JJ’s Death
Season 5 picks up right after the shocking events of the Season 4 finale. The Pogues are dealing with the loss of JJ (Rudy Pankow), who was killed by his biological father Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) in Morocco.
The official synopsis from Netflix describes the season:
“Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats.”
The Pogues face multiple dangers. Chandler Groff remains at large. Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) and the Corsairs are closing in. The Kooks are making sure the Pogues have no home to return to.
John B (Chase Stokes) , Sarah (Madelyn Cline) , Kiara (Madison Bailey) , Pope (Jonathan Daviss) , and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) must rely on their instincts to survive. They form an uneasy alliance with Rafe (Drew Starkey) to keep from falling apart.
The mission has become personal. The Pogues are in a race to reclaim their future and avenge their best friend.
Showrunner Shannon Burke previously told Entertainment Weekly that JJ’s death will shape the entire season:
“It’s going to be the main story for the rest of season 5 — it’s going to be the emotional spine. It’s not something you get over in a day or an episode. It’s something that is going to affect them and it’s going to be the emotional center of the rest of the series.”
The teaser trailer shows the group grieving and seeking revenge. The footage also includes shots of the Pogues in prison and Cleo destroying the beloved van, The Twinkie.
The trailer is set to alt-J’s “Left Hand Free,” which has become an anthem for the show.

The main cast returns for Season 5. Returning series regulars include:

Filming Wrapped in Late 2025
Production on Season 5 wrapped on December 19, 2025. The cast and crew filmed in multiple locations, including Charleston, South Carolina, and abroad.
The show also did a location shoot in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Scenes from the teaser show the Pogues in custody and attending a hearing in what appears to be Croatia.
Filming began in June 2025, with a casting call for extras revealing a start date of June 16, 2025. The production schedule lasted about six months.
The Creators’ Vision for the Ending
The creators have known how the show would end for years. Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke first imagined a five-season journey back in 2017.
In a statement to fans, the creators said:
“We hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago. Season 5 will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”
The creators described Season 4 as their longest and hardest season to produce. They called the Season 4 finale their most powerful episode.
The show was renewed for Season 5 in November 2024, just ahead of the Season 4 Part 2 debut.
