Pankaj Tripathi, one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema, recently opened up about what truly makes a film successful. The actor, who has worked in both massive productions and small independent movies, believes that a film’s budget does not decide its quality. According to him, it is the vision behind the story that really matters.

Tripathi made these comments while talking about his upcoming big-budget project Mirzapur: The Movie and his recent cameo in the smaller film Ohh My Dog. He explained that while big films need more hype and marketing, a movie becomes great because of its creative direction, not because of how much money is spent on it.

“Trailer plays a huge part in a film’s appeal. If it develops curiosity within the audience, they want to see it. For bigger films, you do have to create a lot of hype but budget se film chaudi banti hai, film badi vision se banti hai.”

The Actor’s Take on Big Budgets vs. Strong Vision

Tripathi, who is 49 years old, has seen both sides of the film industry. He is set to appear in Mirzapur: The Movie, which is reportedly made on a budget of around INR 250 crore. This is a massive production that brings back his famous character from the popular web series. At the same time, he recently did a cameo in Ohh My Dog, a film directed by Amit Rai that was made on a much smaller budget.

When asked whether a film’s scale affects how many people come to watch it in theatres, Tripathi gave a straightforward answer. He said that the trailer is what really pulls the audience in. If the trailer creates curiosity, people will want to watch the film. He agreed that big films need a lot of promotion to build excitement. But he made it clear that spending a lot of money does not automatically make a film good or successful.

His statement “budget se film chaudi banti hai, badi vision se banti hai” translates to “a film is not made wide with budget, it is made big with vision.” This simple yet powerful message shows his belief that creative storytelling and a clear vision are more important than financial resources.

Shooting in His Hometown: A Special Experience

One of the highlights of working on Ohh My Dog for Tripathi was that the shooting took place in Bihar, his home state. This was a deeply personal experience for the actor. He shared how different it felt to shoot in the same streets where he used to ride his bicycle as a child.

“Bachpan mein jin galiyon mein cycle leke nikalte the, aaj wahaan shoot Kar rahe the. Log nikal ke apni chaton pe aa rahe the dekhne ki Pankaj Tripathi shoot Kar rahe hain. Bihar mein aaj bhi main Pankaj sir nahi Pankaj bhaiya hun.”

This translates to: “The streets where I used to ride my cycle as a child, today I was shooting there. People came out on their rooftops to watch Pankaj Tripathi shoot. In Bihar, even today I am not Pankaj sir, I am Pankaj bhaiya.” This shows how connected he remains to his roots despite his success.

Staying Neutral on Industry Controversies

Ohh My Dog also brought Tripathi back together with director Amit Rai, with whom he had worked on OMG 2. This film came at a time when there was a credit dispute between the makers and actor Paresh Rawal regarding the 2023 film. When asked about this issue, Tripathi chose to stay out of it completely.

He said that he does not know much about the matter and has only heard what others have heard from the news. He did not call anyone to clarify things because he does not like to get involved in such disputes. He believes that everyone has their own rights and opinions. This neutral and grounded approach is typical of the actor, who prefers to focus on his work rather than industry gossip.

Taking a Break and Finding Peace in Nature

Tripathi is known as one of the busiest actors in Bollywood, but in recent years, he has slowed down his pace. He revealed that he is still in the middle of a break from work. He shared that he does not feel fully rejuvenated yet and feels the need to spend more time in nature.

“I am still in the middle of my break. Abhi wo rejuvenation mehsus nahin ho raha hai. Abhi mujhe 15 din Jake forrest mein rehna hai. Baaki sab ho gaya, main wellness retreat ho aaya, Europe ho aaya, North East ho aaya aur abhi Jyotirling bhi ho ke aaya hun, but Nature mein jana rehta hai.”

This translates to: “I am still in the middle of my break. I am not feeling that rejuvenation yet. Now I need to go and stay in the forest for 15 days. Everything else is done, I have been to a wellness retreat, I have been to Europe, I have been to the North East, and I have also visited the Jyotirling, but I still need to go to nature.” This shows that even after achieving so much, he values mental peace and a connection with the natural world.

What’s Coming Next for Pankaj Tripathi

Fans are eagerly waiting to see Tripathi in Mirzapur: The Movie, which is one of the most anticipated Indian films. The movie is a big-budget extension of the popular Mirzapur series, where he plays the iconic role of Kaleen Bhaiyya. This project brings him back to a character that has a massive fan following.

Before that, he also had a cameo in Ohh My Dog, which was released in theatres on August 7, 2026. The film marked his reunion with director Amit Rai and gave him the chance to shoot in his beloved Bihar.

Tripathi’s recent comments about budget and vision have started a meaningful conversation in the film industry. His words remind everyone that while money can make a film look grand, it is the heart and soul of the story that truly connects with the audience. His own career is proof of this, as he has risen from small beginnings to become one of the most respected actors in the country, all by choosing strong characters and meaningful stories.
