Netflix is expanding the Parasyte universe with a new live-action series titled Parasyte: Tamiya. The show puts the spotlight on Ryoko Tamiya, one of the most interesting characters from the original manga. Shioli Kutsuna, known for her role as Yukio in Deadpool 2, plays the lead role. The series is scheduled to release on Netflix worldwide in 2027.
Director Yeon Sang-ho, who previously created Parasyte: The Grey for Netflix, returns to develop and co-write this new chapter. The show is already in post-production.
Who Is Ryoko Tamiya?
Ryoko Tamiya is a parasite that takes over the body of a high school teacher. In the original manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki, she starts as a brutal creature that attacks humans without thinking twice. But as she spends time around humans and works as a teacher, she begins to change.
What makes Tamiya different from other parasites is her intelligence and her constant questioning about her own existence. She starts to wonder if parasites and humans could live together instead of fighting each other. This shift in thinking turns her from a simple enemy into something much more complex.
Director Yeon Sang-ho shared his thoughts on the character:
“Ryoko Tamiya is a truly captivating villain in the original manga. Her struggles over the nature of her own existence are what elevate the original Parasyte from a simple hero-based manga aimed at kids to something deeper.”
Shioli Kutsuna Takes on Her Most Challenging Role
Shioli Kutsuna plays Ryoko Tamiya in three different stages. She portrays the original human teacher, the violent parasite that takes over her body, and the evolving creature that gets caught between both worlds. Kutsuna called this role the hardest of her career:
“Ryoko Tamiya is the most challenging role I have ever played in my acting career. During the six months I spent living as Tamiya, I experienced many emotions I had never encountered before.”
Kutsuna is a Japanese-Australian actress who has worked in both Japanese and international productions. She appeared in the Netflix sumo drama Sanctuary and played Yukio in Deadpool 2. She is also set to appear in Netflix’s upcoming live-action Gundam film.
Yeon Sang-ho praised Kutsuna’s performance:
“She did a wonderful job of portraying the process of a non-human creature coming to understand both humanity and its own existence.”
What the Series Will Cover
Parasyte: Tamiya tells the story from Ryoko Tamiya’s point of view. The series shows her journey from a mindless predator to a being that starts to understand human emotions and questions her purpose.
In the original story, Tamiya becomes an enemy to the main character Shinichi Izumi. But she is also one of the first parasites to consider whether coexistence with humans might be a better path than killing them. The showrunner wanted to show her ongoing struggle with this idea and how she learns through failures.
“I wanted to convey her perpetual struggle over the need for parasites to coexist with humans and the issue of their survival, and how she suffers setbacks and learns over time. I think the anguish she experiences is the essence of Parasyte.”
The Team Behind the Series
Yeon Sang-ho is the creative force behind Parasyte: Tamiya. He is known for directing the zombie film Train to Busan and creating the Netflix series Hellbound and Parasyte: The Grey.
Yeon co-wrote the scripts with Ryu Yong-jae, who also worked on Parasyte: The Grey. Two directors are handling the series: Kensaku Kakimoto (Glass Heart) and Kazuhiro Nakagawa (Double, Bullet Train Explosion). The production company Wowpoint, which worked on Parasyte: The Grey, is also producing this series.
Yeon explained his choice of directors:
“I chose these two directors precisely because they have such different styles, and I had high hopes for a collaboration between them.”
Connection to the Original Manga and Previous Adaptations
The Parasyte manga, created by Hitoshi Iwaaki, ran from 1988 to 1995. It has sold about 25 million copies in over 20 countries. The story has been adapted into an anime series, Japanese live-action films, and the 2024 Korean series Parasyte: The Grey.
Parasyte: The Grey was a big success for Netflix. It spent four weeks on the Global Top 10 Non-English TV list and reached number one in 34 countries.
Unlike Parasyte: The Grey, which created new characters set in modern-day Korea, Parasyte: Tamiya goes back to the original Japanese manga storyline. The series focuses on a character that already existed in the source material.
The Parasyte manga has remained popular for more than 30 years. Its mix of action, horror, and deep questions about humanity has kept fans engaged across different generations.
Netflix Japan’s manager of live action creative, Sato Yoshihiro, spoke about the show’s themes:
“‘What makes a human?’ ‘Can we coexist with beings that are different from us?’ These questions posed by Parasyte more than 30 years ago feel much more pressing for our modern society.”

The series is already in post-production and is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2027. Exact release date details have not been announced yet.
