Dave explained that the relationship ended because of the massive distance between their homes. He lives in Australia, while Sophie lives in Manchester, England. The time difference and busy daily schedules made staying together almost impossible after the excitement of the show faded.

One of the most unexpected details about this split is the timing. Dave and Sophie did not break up after their prize trip. They broke up at the start of it. The pair had six to eight weeks between filming ending and their scheduled flight to the Maldives. During that waiting period, their phone calls and messages started to feel forced.
When they finally met up for the luxury vacation, Dave decided to be direct. He told Sophie that he did not want to have a fake romantic holiday just to go home and pretend. He preferred to enjoy the expensive trip as friends.
Dave joked about the situation, saying they are likely the only two people in history who “friend-zoned each other in the Maldives.” He described the trip as awesome and nice, explaining that they spent their time snorkeling and relaxing without the pressure of a label.
Sophie Willett Confirms Distance Was the Dealbreaker
Sophie Willett agreed with Dave’s version of events in her own interviews. She said that the whole wide ocean between them was simply too big to cross. She cited a lack of communication and effort as the main reasons they decided to switch to being friends.
Despite the romantic failure, Sophie said she does not regret the experience. She thanked Dave for making her feel safe and comfortable, which allowed her to be her authentic self on the show.
