Paramount Pictures has officially locked in a summer 2027 release date for its remake of the 1981 cult horror classic “Possession.” The film, directed by “Smile” filmmaker Parker Finn, will hit theaters on June 11, 2027. Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley are set to play the lead roles, taking over the parts originally played by Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani.
The movie will open against Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon 2” on the same weekend.
Parker Finn Directs the Cult Classic Remake
Parker Finn, who gained recognition for his work on the horror hits “Smile” and “Smile 2,” is writing and directing the new version of “Possession”. He is producing the film alongside Jonathan Fass through their Bad Feeling banner, with Roy Lee and Andrew Childs from Vertigo Entertainment also producing. Robert Pattinson is also serving as a producer on the project. Marc Bienstock is the executive producer.
The original “Possession,” directed by Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żuławski, was released in 1981 and starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani. The film won Adjani the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Set in Cold War-era West Berlin, the story follows a married couple whose relationship falls apart and descends into psychological breakdown, body horror, and supernatural madness.
Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley Play the Married Couple
Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley will play the husband and wife at the center of the story. Turner is known for his work in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “The Boys in the Boat,” and “Eternity”. He also stars opposite Monica Barbaro in the romantic comedy “One Night Only”.
Qualley has built a strong reputation with roles in “The Substance,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Poor Things”. She will next appear in Ridley Scott’s apocalyptic sci-fi thriller “The Dog Stars,” the romantic drama “Love of Your Life” with Patrick Schwarzenegger, and “King Snake” directed by Jeff Nichols.
The supporting cast includes Diego Calva, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Paul Dano. Their roles have not been disclosed yet.
Original Star Isabelle Adjani Gives Her Blessing
Isabelle Adjani, who played the wife in the original 1981 film, has given her approval to Margaret Qualley taking on the role. Adjani has praised Qualley as an exceptionally talented actress and said she understands why a new generation of filmmakers would want to revisit the material.
The original “Possession” has developed a strong cult following over the decades, particularly for its intense performances and surreal treatment of marriage breakdown, identity, and horror. The film is considered one of the most distinctive psychological horror movies of the 1980s.
