K-Drama Queen of Tears: Kim Ji Won Steals the Show After IU Passes on Role!
South Korea’s latest K-Drama sensation, “Queen of Tears,” is captivating audiences around the world. The drama, which airs on weekends on tvN, has consistently held high ratings, reaching a whopping 20% viewership in recent episodes. But what’s behind the show’s global success? The answer lies not only in the gripping storyline but also in the show’s phenomenal cast, especially Kim Ji Won’s captivating performance.
Kim Ji Won takes center stage as Hong Hae In, a cold and proud heiress to a massive chaebol (family-owned conglomerate) empire. Her portrayal has received rave reviews, with fans praising her ability to bring the complex character to life. However, many might be surprised to learn that Kim Ji Won wasn’t always destined to play Hae In!
According to a recent report from Korean media outlet Insight, the role was first offered to none other than K-Pop superstar IU! This would have been a dream come true for fans, as it would have reunited IU with screenwriter Park Ji Eun and her “The Producers” co-star Kim Soo Hyun.
But wait, there’s a plot twist! Back in April 2022, when Park Ji Eun was first crafting the story for “Queen of Tears,” IU was her top pick for the lead role. This would have been a fantastic fit, considering IU’s past collaborations with both Park and Kim Soo Hyun. Unfortunately, IU wasn’t able to accept the offer due to scheduling conflicts with other commitments. As IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, stated, “IU respectfully declined the offer due to other commitments.”
With IU out of the picture, Park Ji Eun turned her attention to Kim Ji Won. This turned out to be a casting masterstroke! Kim’s incredible performance as Hae In has not only propelled the show’s success but has also catapulted her career to new heights since her debut in 2010.
So, while a reunion between IU, Park Ji Eun, and Kim Soo Hyun would have been exciting, Kim Ji Won’s flawless performance proves that she was the perfect choice for the role. “Queen of Tears” continues to reign supreme, captivating audiences with its blend of romance, family drama, and of course, Kim Ji Won’s unforgettable performance!
