HBOโs comedy-drama Rooster delivered its penultimate episode on May 3, 2026, bringing family secrets to light and putting professors under serious pressure before the season finale.

Episode 9, titled โLudlowโs Fourth Hottest Professor,โ dropped on HBO and Max at 10 p.m. ET. The episode is now available for streaming. With only one episode left on May 10, the show is setting up major decisions for Greg Russo (Steve Carell) , his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) , and her complicated ex-husband Archie (Phil Dunster) .
Katie Learns the Truth About Her Job and Tenure
The biggest moment of Episode 9 comes when Katie confronts her father about why he really came to Ludlow College.
Katie spends most of the episode trying to rebuild her confidence. After her marriage fell apart and she burned down Archieโs campus residence, she has been struggling. In this episode, Tommy helps her feel better by telling her she is one of the top five hottest professors at Ludlow. The compliment sounds silly, but it actually gives her the push she needs.

She then talks to Dylan Shepherd (Danielle Deadwyler) about a program that helps professors get tenure. Dylan tells her it could take five years. But later, Walt tells Katie he will fast-track her tenure to just one year. Katie stands there shocked, unable to believe what she just heard.
She quickly figures out that her mother Elizabeth interfered. When Katie confronts her mom, Elizabeth admits she helped Katie get her job at Ludlow in the first place. She also helped speed up the tenure process. Katie feels humiliated. She realizes her whole career at the college came from her parentsโ influence, not her own work.
The Confrontation Between Katie and Russo
Later that night, Katie waits for her father to return from the hockey game. He comes back excited after the team won. But Katie does not share his happiness.
She confronts him directly. She asks if he only took the writer-in-residence job to save her position at the college. Russo admits it is true. He tells her he wanted to protect her and make sure she did not get fired after the fire incident.
โShe wishes he hadnโt helped her get the job or keep it so she could have gotten away from Archie.โ – Episode Recap
Katie tells him she could have escaped the โfishbowlโ of Ludlow and her toxic relationship with Archie if he had let her fail on her own. She storms out mid-conversation, leaving Russo sitting alone and sad. He also confesses he has become online friends with Sunnyโs father, which makes Katie even more upset.

Archie Loses Control Under Book Deadline Pressure
While Katie deals with family drama, Archie is falling apart in his office.
He has cancelled his classes for two days to focus on writing his book. Dylan finds him hyped up on Celsius energy drinks, talking fast and acting strange. He asks her, โYou ever have one of these Celsius beverages?โ and wonders if kids should even be allowed to drink them.
His behavior gets worse when he meets with his students. He hands them his manuscript, but when they give honest feedback that the 600-page book needs editing, he loses his temper.
โGo ahead, fuckity bye!โ – Archie, dismissing his students
He kicks all the students out of the classroom. His editor also gives him bad news about the book, but when Sunny walks up to him, he lies and tells her the editor loved everything.
Russo Helps the Hockey Team and Coach Jake
Another major storyline in Episode 9 involves Russo helping the Ludlow hockey team.
Russo and Dylan meet with Coach Jake to discuss him returning to the team. But Russo notices something wrong. Jake is sober from drugs and alcohol, but he has developed a new problem: online gambling. Russo sees the signs immediately and understands that addiction can come back in different forms.
Walt also fights to keep the hockey program alive. A trustee calls the team โtrimmable fatโ because it does not make money. Walt argues that value should not only be measured by profit. Russo adds a funny line when the trustee laughs so hard he cracks a tooth: โIโm not sure that means your teeth should fall out when you laugh.โ
The team ends up winning a crucial match, and the trustee starts to see value in keeping the program. The win also gives Russo a sense of purpose at Ludlow, even though the show keeps reminding viewers that he is supposed to leave soon.
Katie and Archie Share a Surprising Kiss
After Katie storms away from her father, she ends up at a diner. Coincidentally, Archie is there too, drinking tea and feeling sorry for himself.
They start talking. Archie tells Katie she is the most brilliant person he has ever known. She tells him his book will get published someday. The conversation feels soft and familiar.
Then Katie tells him she is โinโ for their relationship again. She kisses him and leaves the diner, with Archie sitting there stunned. Many viewers think Katie made this choice because she was angry at her father, not because Archie has actually changed.
Sunny Makes a Big Decision About Her Future
Sunny meets with Walt and Mo to tell them she turned down her dream job.
She decided to stay with Archie and raise their family together. Walt supports her decision but gives her a warning. He tells her to make sure Archie is as committed to the relationship as she is. Mo agrees and says if Archie does not step up, she will help Walt โtake Archie out.โ
The scene shows that Sunnyโs friends care about her, but they do not fully trust Archie. Her decision to give up her career for him feels risky, and Walt wants her to be sure he will not let her down.

What Happens Next Before the Finale
The season finale of Rooster will air on May 10, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
With only one episode left, several questions remain unanswered. Will Katie actually get back together with Archie after everything he did? Can Russo leave Ludlow when he has become so important to the students and the hockey team? Will Sunny regret giving up her dream job?
