The creators of School Spirits are already thinking about what comes next. Following the Season 3 finale that dropped on March 4, 2026, co-showrunners Nate and Megan Trinrud opened up about potential stories for a fourth season. They made one thing clear: fans would “have to join the Split River afterlife” to get the real secrets .

Paramount+ has not officially renewed the series for Season 4 yet. But the creative team behind the Peyton List-led drama is not waiting around. They have plans.

Showrunners “Excited” About Potential School Spirits Season 4

The Season 3 finale left viewers with massive changes to the show’s universe. The barrier keeping ghosts inside Split River High fell. Characters like Wally (Milo Manheim) and Janet found themselves in a mysterious new forest dimension. And in the final moments, the evil ghost Mr. Van Heidt took over the body of Maddie’s mother, Sandra .

With so many threads hanging, the writers already know where they want to go. “We are very excited for what could possibly be ahead if we are so lucky to get renewed,” Nate Trinrud told TV Insider. He confirmed the team always plans ahead in the writers room. “We’re never trying to kind of write ourselves into a corner. We can’t tell you the secrets โ€” you’d have to join the Split River afterlife” .

Megan Trinrud added that the finale was designed to open up the world. The ghosts can now explore the town of Split River. “The world has changed,” she said. Oliver Goldstick, who also serves as co-showrunner, noted this allows them to explore ghosts meeting family members they haven’t seen in decades .

What the Season 3 Finale Means for the Story

The collapse of the school’s barrier changes everything. For seasons, the ghosts were trapped on campus. Now they can leave. “The town of Split River is going to feel like such a massive world to them after being trapped in one building for so long,” Megan Trinrud explained. She said the experience will feel overwhelming for characters who have been “in prison for 40 plus years” suddenly released .

Then there is the new forest dimension. Nate Trinrud described it as “ley lines or the ghost roads.” It is a new plane of existence the writers only started exploring in the finale. “Now we know that this world exists,” he told Us Weekly. “Those characters, for us, are not going anywhere” .

The Van Heidt possession of Sandra creates immediate danger for Season 4. Nate Trinrud connected this to personal experience. He said he and Megan struggled writing this season after their father passed away. That loss made them realize how far someone will go “even for the people who’ve hurt you in your life if you could bring them back or keep them safe.” He said they are “excited to explore what it means for Maddie to have to move heaven and earth” to save her mother .

Cast and Characters Moving Forward

The ensemble cast remains central to any future season. Peyton List leads as Maddie, with Milo Manheim as Wally, Kristian Ventura as Simon, and Spencer MacPherson as Xavier. Season 3 introduced Jennifer Tilly as Dr. Hunter-Price, a recurring guest star .

Nick Pugliese, who plays Charley, told PopCulture.com he is excited about exploring his character in a relationship. “This season, you go through the ups and the downs of what a relationship actually can be,” he said .

Sarah Yarkin teased that Rhonda will connect more with other ghosts like Quinn. “It could be nice to see. It could be sweet. It could be cute,” she said .

For Simon, now trapped in the spirit world, the dynamic has flipped. Kristian Ventura told Bleeding Cool the switch gives Simon a new edge. “It’s like, ‘Tag! You’re it! You run and chase me!’” He described Simon as now “a selfish guy fighting for his own survival, desperate to get out”.

The Doorway Twist and What Lies Beyond

The Season 3 finale revealed the doors in ghosts’ scars do not lead to heaven or hell. They lead to a forest where spirits wander. Some get stuck in “reflections” of their best memories .

Nate Trinrud explained the show never wanted to make “grand statements about heaven or hell.” Instead, the doors represent a moment of clarity. “The work isn’t over,” he said. Megan Trinrud added they have “only just started to look at what’s beyond the door and what’s the purpose of that place” .

Goldstick described it as “another plane of existence.” He said it “may not be what you expected, and it may be purgatory. It might be a waiting room. We don’t know what this is” .

For now, fans wait. School Spirits Season 3 is streaming now on Paramount+. The showrunners wait too, hoping for news that lets them keep telling stories in Split River.
