Selena Gomez is one of the most popular and successful singers and actors in the world, but she also has a relatable habit of falling asleep to her favorite TV shows. However, this habit led to an awkward moment at the 2024 Emmy Awards, when her boyfriend, music producer Benny Blanco, revealed it to one of the stars of her current comfort show, How I Met Your Mother’s Jason Segel.
The embarrassing encounter that made Selena Gomez say “That’s weird!”
Selena Gomez, who was nominated for her role in the hit comedy series Only Murders in the Building, shared the hilarious story on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Friday. She told the host that she had been watching Segel’s sitcom every night before bed, and was excited to see him at the award ceremony. However, when she waved back at him, she realized he was actually waving to someone behind her.
“He felt awkward and inclined to then come over,” Gomez recalled. “And then my boyfriend goes [to Segel], ‘Oh, she falls asleep to you every night.’”
The Love On singer was mortified by Blanco’s remark, and looked at him in horror, saying, “That’s weird!” She then admitted to Kimmel and the audience that it was true, and that she was a fan of Segel’s show. Kimmel joked that Blanco was just being honest, and that Segel probably appreciated the compliment.
Gomez and Blanco’s relationship timeline and status
Selena Gomez and Blanco confirmed their relationship in December 2023, after collaborating on several songs, including Single Soon and I Can’t Get Enough. Gomez revealed on social media that they had been dating privately for six months, and defended him from trolls who criticized his appearance or their age difference. She also called him “the best thing that’s ever happened” to her, and said he treats her “better than any human being on this planet.”
Since then, the couple has been more open about their romance, posting cute photos and videos on Instagram, and attending events together, such as the Golden Globes and the Grammys. Gomez also gushed about Blanco in a recent interview on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1, saying that he respects her, understands her world, and makes her feel safe and happy.
“I think it’s just really important to meet someone that respects you,” Selena Gomez said. “And I think it’s really nice to also lean on someone who understands the world that I live in. But I’d have to say overall, it’s the safest that I feel and it’s been really lovely and I’ve only grown through it, so it’s awesome.”
Segel’s reaction and friendship with Gomez
Segel, who played Marshall Eriksen on How I Met Your Mother for nine seasons, did not seem to mind Blanco’s comment, and was friendly and gracious to Gomez. He even posed for a photo with her and Blanco, which Gomez later shared on her Instagram story, captioning it, “I love him [Segel] too.”
Segel, who is also a writer, producer, and director, has been working on his new comedy series Shrinking, which he created and stars in. The show, which premiered on Hulu in January, follows a man who decides to undergo a controversial procedure that shrinks him to four inches tall, in order to escape his problems and live a simpler life.
Segel and Selena Gomez have also expressed their mutual admiration and support for each other’s work, and have become friends over the years. Segel praised Gomez’s performance in Only Murders in the Building, which he called “brilliant and hilarious.” Gomez, meanwhile, congratulated Segel on his Emmy nomination for Shrinking, which he lost to Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis.
Despite the embarrassing encounter, Selena Gomez and Blanco seem to have a good sense of humor about it, and are not letting it affect their relationship or their friendship with Segel. Gomez even joked on Kimmel that she might switch to another show to fall asleep to, such as The Office or Friends. However, she added, “I still love [Segel], he’s great.”
