Shaquille O’Neal has always been larger than life, both on and off the basketball court. The NBA legend has acted in movies, appeared in countless commercials, and become one of the most recognizable faces in the world. But there is one big screen dream that has never come true for him: joining the Avengers.
In a recent interview with Variety, the 54-year-old basketball Hall of Famer finally explained why Marvel Studios turned him down for a role in the blockbuster franchise. The reason might surprise you, but it also makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
O’Neal has wanted to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. He first shared his interest back in 2018 during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he joked about wanting to fight Robert Downey Jr. ‘s Iron Man. But despite his fame and connections, the studio never gave him a chance.
Marvel Executives Had One Big Concern
According to O’Neal, the issue was not his acting ability or his age. It was simply that he is too famous. Hollywood executives told him that audiences would not be able to see him as a character. They would only see Shaq.
“I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers’ and they were like, ‘Shaq, we f**kin’ love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’”
The former Los Angeles Lakers star accepted the explanation without any hard feelings. He recalled his response clearly.
“He said it truthfully, and I was like, alright… I guess my face is too bigtime.”
The Same Problem Affects All His Acting Roles
O’Neal explained that this is not just a Marvel problem. It applies to every serious acting role he has ever pursued. He shared that top Hollywood executives have told him the same thing repeatedly.
“I would love to do more action roles but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big, and what they mean by that is when I pop up on the screen everyone will go, ‘Oh, that’s Shaq!’ So, if I’m trying to play a doctor or anything, my character won’t be believable.”
This honest admission shows that even someone as successful as Shaquille O’Neal faces barriers in Hollywood. His fame, which has brought him fortune and recognition, is also the very thing standing between him and certain acting opportunities.
Not His First Superhero Movie
While O’Neal never got his Avengers role, he did play a superhero before. In 1997, he starred as the title character in Steel, a movie based on the DC Comics character. The film did not perform well at the box office, but O’Neal still looks back on the experience positively.
“It was an awesome opportunity,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “However, I’d like to redo it and get some of these 2018 special effects.”
Steel was not a success, but it gave O’Neal a taste of the superhero genre. He has clearly wanted another shot ever since. Unfortunately, Marvel’s decision means that fans will not see him fighting alongside Thor, Captain America, or any other Avenger.

Even without a Marvel role, Shaquille O’Neal stays very active in entertainment. He recently made a cameo appearance in the new Scary Movie film. He also has an upcoming role in Grown Ups 3, the comedy franchise starring Adam Sandler and his friends.
The NBA legend is also promoting his own project called Dunkman, which is the first professional dunking league. Contestants from around the world compete for a grand prize of $500,000. The finals are scheduled to air on TNT on August 25, 2026.
During the same Variety interview, O’Neal also shared another Hollywood wish. He said he wants to make a movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson so he can beat him up on screen. When asked if he could actually take down The Rock, O’Neal replied with confidence.
“Oh, easy! Barbecue chicken.”
Will Shaquille O’Neal Ever Join the MCU?
For now, it seems that Shaquille O’Neal will not appear in any Avengers movie. The upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on December 18, 2026. It features a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and many others. But Shaq will not be among them.
He has made peace with the decision. He understands that his larger-than-life personality and instantly recognizable face make it hard for audiences to see him as anyone other than Shaq. While that may have cost him a spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has also made him one of the most beloved and successful athletes of all time.
Fans who wanted to see Shaquille O’Neal suit up as an Avenger will have to settle for watching him in his other movies and TV appearances. But knowing Shaq, he will probably keep asking. And who knows? Maybe one day, Marvel will change its mind.
