Director Shingo Natsume, known for One-Punch Man Season 1 and Sonny Boy, has revealed his first original animated feature film. The movie is titled ghost โ end of night (also written as ghost/Yoru no Hate). It will release in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027. A new teaser trailer and key visual have been released to mark the announcement.
Madhouse Produces Shingo Natsume’s First Original Feature Film
The film marks a major step for Shingo Natsume as it is his first completely original feature film. He is directing the movie and also writing the screenplay. The animation is being produced by the famous studio Madhouse, known for works like Death Note, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and One-Punch Man Season 1.
The production team includes several notable creators. Natsume Ono, the manga artist behind ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. and House of Five Leaves, is responsible for the original character designs. Norifumi Kugai, who worked on Sonny Boy, is adapting those designs for animation.
Teaser Trailer and Key Visual Show a Mysterious World
A new “super teaser” trailer and the first key visual have been released. The teaser features the insert song “Sugar” by the band Hitsujibungaku. The visual shows a night sky full of stars with two characters: a black-haired girl named Nike (also spelled Neekei) and a man named Mas, who holds an umbrella behind her.
The teaser begins with the girl’s words, “Occasionally, very rarely, I encounter something beautiful in the starry sky.” It ends with the caption, “I want to know the ‘truth’.”
Director Shingo Natsume shared his thoughts on the project. He said the film shows “the trajectory of a 15-year-old girl as she falls into the depths of night” and that it is “a universal story that stirs the conflicting emotions that everyone hides deep within their hearts.”
Story Set in a Future Where Work No Longer Exists
The story of ghost โ end of night is set in a near-future world where human labor is no longer necessary. It follows Nike (Neekei), a girl who rebels against the order of a contented society while continuing to search for something “real”.
The premise explores themes of loneliness, courage, and the search for meaning in a world that seems to have already achieved perfection. The movie was previously presented at the MIFA 2025 event during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
