Bill Lawrence quickly cleared up the confusion. He confirmed that Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and the rest of the main cast are all coming back for Season 4.
“There is a Season 4 with the EXACT same cast (that’s why we are doing it, we love each other).”
This means Jason Segel will return as Jimmy. Harrison Ford will be back as Dr. Paul Rhoades. The show is not moving away from its stars. Instead, it is moving the story forward to a new point in their lives.
Why The Show Needed A Fresh Start
The creative team always planned for the first three seasons to tell one complete story. That story was about grief, forgiveness, and moving forward. Bill Lawrence explained that the first season dealt with grief. The second season focused on forgiveness. The third season was about moving on.
After three seasons, Jimmy’s journey through the loss of his wife is finished. The writers did not want to repeat the same emotional beats.
Bill Lawrence explained that if Season 4 started with Jason Segel’s character still feeling very sad about his wife, audiences would feel they had already seen that story. So, the team decided to wrap up all the remaining threads properly. This allows them to start clean with a new situation for every character.
What A Completely Different Story Means For The Cast
The creators have confirmed that Shrinking Season 4 will include a major time jump. This will likely be more than a year or two into the future. This time jump will change the setting for almost every main character.
Based on where Season 3 left everyone, here is what fans can expect:
- Jimmy (Jason Segel): He is finally moving forward. At the end of Season 3, he started a new relationship with Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders. Jason Segel has said he hopes Jimmy gets to have some actual fun in Season 4 after three seasons of heavy emotional struggles. The show will explore what it looks like for him to build a serious second relationship.
- Paul (Harrison Ford): Even though Harrison Ford’s character moved to Connecticut at the end of Season 3, Bill Lawrence confirmed he will still be a central character. His Parkinson’s disease will continue to be part of his story.
- Alice (Lukita Maxwell): Jimmy’s daughter is leaving for college in Connecticut. This puts her close to Paul, which creates new opportunities for both characters.
- Gaby (Jessica Williams): She is taking over Paul’s practice and plans to open a crisis therapy clinic.
- Other Characters: Brian and Charlie are raising a kid. Liz and Derek are now grandparents. Sean is in a completely different place in his own personal story.

Release Timeline For Shrinking Season 4
Apple TV+ renewed Shrinking for a fourth season back in January 2026. This renewal came even before Season 3 started airing. This shows that the streaming service has a lot of confidence in the show.
There is no official release date for Shrinking Season 4 yet. The writers are currently working on creating the new storyline. Based on past release schedules, a release in early 2027 is a likely window. Fans can rewatch Seasons 1-3 on Apple TV+ while waiting for the new season.
