Horror fans have a new reason to keep their Shudder subscriptions active. The streaming service has officially picked up the rights to Sundown, a supernatural vampire horror film from director Rebekah McKendry, according to an exclusive report from Variety. The movie wrapped production earlier this year and has already made its world premiere at a major film festival, with McKendry calling it a personal passion project inspired by her love of 1980s vampire movies.
What Sundown Is About
The official logline sets up a tense, cabin-in-the-woods scenario with a supernatural bite. Sundown follows three generations of women who reunite at a remote cabin to avenge the death of a loved one. But things take a dark turn when they realize the man they have captured is not who he appears to be. Even worse, his family is closing in and waiting for sundown.
The film mixes revenge, family drama, and monster horror. McKendry has described it as a “family vs monster tale” that is both claustrophobic and terrifying, according to a statement from executive producer Slash.
Who Stars in Sundown
The cast is led by several recognizable faces from the horror and thriller world. Olwen Fouéré, known for her roles in The Watchers and Mandy, stars alongside Camille Sullivan (Shelby Oaks), Summer H. Howell (Carrie), Daniel Bernhardt (The Matrix Reloaded, Nobody 2), and David Alpay (From).
Supporting cast members include Kyle Mac (Reacher), Elisa Paszt, David Ian McKendry, Junko Bailey (The Grudge), and Megan Best (Elevator Game).
Rebekah McKendry’s Passion Project
McKendry wrote the film with Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry, the same team behind her 2022 horror feature Glorious. In a statement about the film, McKendry shared that the setting and family dynamics hit close to home.
“The town in ‘Sundown’ feels very much like the hometown of my youth, and its family squabbles are ones I know all too well. I am both a daughter and a mother, and this film allowed me to explore female relationships inspired by my own life while celebrating my deep love of ’80s vampire movies. Add monsters, revenge, and a sharp dose of acerbic wit, and this became a passion project for me.”
She also praised the cast and crew for pushing through tough conditions. The film was shot in Winnipeg, Canada, where temperatures dropped as low as -40 degrees, and the team had to trudge through two feet of snow.
Slash and the Production Team
Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash serves as an executive producer on Sundown under his BerserkerGang label. He is joined by executive producers Michael Vasicek, Michael Da Silva, and Rodrigo Gudiño.
The producer lineup includes Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18 Media, along with Michael Paszt, Andrew Thomas Hunt, and James Fler from Raven Banner.
What Shudder Said About the Film
Mark Ward of IFC Entertainment Group, which negotiated the deal on behalf of Shudder, had strong praise for the movie.
“‘Sundown’ is ferocious, smart and completely unafraid to have a great time with horror. Rebekah yet again proves that she can sustain a killer tone that balances brutal thrills and genuine supernatural menace, delivering the kind of wild ride that stays with you. We knew immediately that this was a film Shudder audiences would embrace.”
The deal was negotiated by Ward for Shudder and Michael Paszt of Raven Banner for the filmmakers.

Sundown’s Festival Run and Release Status
Sundown made its world premiere at the 79th Locarno Film Festival on August 13, 2026, in Switzerland. The film then had its North American premiere at Beyond Fest 2026 in Los Angeles on September 26, 2026, with a Q&A featuring McKendry.
The movie runs approximately 80 minutes and is rated R for strong violence, gore, grisly images, language, and some nudity. A specific Shudder streaming release date has not been announced yet.
