The popular Millennium book series is coming back to screens in a new way. Sky has officially ordered a television series adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s famous novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. This new project will not be a simple remake. Instead, it is described as a bold and contemporary reimagining that brings the story into the present day.

The show will have eight episodes and is being produced by Left Bank Pictures, the company known for hit series like The Crown and Dept Q. Writing the series are Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher, Behind Her Eyes) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Behind Her Eyes), who will also serve as executive producers.

What The New TV Show Is About

The core story remains the same as the beloved novel. The series follows Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist, and Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant but troubled computer hacker. The two are hired to investigate the long-unsolved disappearance of a young woman from a powerful family.

While the original book was set in the early 2000s, the Sky series will update the story. The official description states the show is “grounded in the characters and investigative DNA of Stieg Larssonโ€™s Millennium novels, with themes that carry heightened relevance today”. This means viewers can expect the same intense mystery and complex characters, but placed in a modern setting.

The People Making the Show

A talented team is behind this new adaptation. The lead writers, Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna, previously worked together on the Netflix thriller Behind Her Eyes. They are joined by executive producers Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, and John Phillips from Left Bank Pictures, and Sam Hoyle representing Sky.

Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna will write and executive produce the eight-episode Sky Original with Left Bank Pictures producing.

The production also involves film producers Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin, who were involved with the previous Hollywood movie adaptations. Sony Pictures Television, where Left Bank is based, will manage international distribution of the series.

Production Schedule and Filming Location

Work on the series is moving forward quickly. Official reports confirm that filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The production will take place in Lithuania, a country in Northern Europe.

The choice to film in Lithuania continues a tradition of European production for the Millennium stories. The original Swedish film series was shot in Sweden, and the setting is a key part of the Nordic noir atmosphere.

How to Watch the Series When It Releases

The show will be a Sky Original, meaning it will first be available on Sky platforms in several European countries. This includes the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

For viewers in the United States and other global markets, Sony Pictures Television is already working on distribution. Reports indicate that pre-sale efforts are currently underway to bring the series to audiences worldwide. This means a U.S. streaming service or network is likely to pick up the rights, though no deal has been announced yet.

The History of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Adaptations

This will be the third major screen adaptation of the first Millennium book. The story began as a global publishing phenomenon. Stieg Larsson’s trilogy has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Larsson completed three novels before his death in 2004, and other authors have continued the book series.

The first adaptation was a Swedish film trilogy starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander and Michael Nyqvist as Mikael Blomkvist. These movies were later edited into a six-part television series.

In 2011, director David Fincher made an English-language film version for Hollywood. It starred Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. A later film, The Girl in the Spider’s Web (2018), continued the story with Claire Foy taking on the role of Salander.

An attempt to make a TV series was also in development at Amazon several years ago, but that project did not move forward. The new Sky series is a completely separate and active production.

Key Questions About the Upcoming Series

Who will play Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist? This is the biggest question for fans. As of now, no casting announcements have been made. The roles are iconic, with past performances by Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara leaving a strong impression. Casting news is expected to be a major announcement later in 2026.

When will the series be released? There is no official release date yet. With filming starting in spring 2026, a premiere date in late 2026 or 2027 is a realistic expectation. More details will come as production begins.

How different will it be from the movies? The producers have stressed this is a “reimagining” set in the present day. While the central mystery and character dynamics will be familiar, the updated setting will allow the show to explore contemporary issues related to technology, power, and justice.

The announcement has generated discussion online, with some fans expressing a desire for the show to capture the dark, gritty feel of the original Swedish films. The success of the series will depend on its ability to honor the source material while finding a fresh angle for a new audience. The involvement of proven talent like Left Bank Pictures and writers experienced in suspenseful drama suggests the project is in capable hands.
