What Happened in Sparks of Tomorrow Episode 1
Episode 1 is titled “The Electric Boy”. The episode begins in Kyoto during the 36th year of the Meiji Era. In this alternate history, steam technology became the foundation of civilization while electricity remained an impossible dream.
The story opens with young Kihachi Sakamoto traveling by train with his older brother Seiroku. Seiroku carries a notebook called the “20th Century Electrical Catalog” and encourages Kihachi to dream of inventions that have never existed before.
At the Fifth National Industrial Technology Exhibition, Seiroku secretly lights up a pathway with electrical bulbs. This act is considered heretical in a steam-powered society. The police chase the brothers, but they escape together. Seiroku promises Kihachi that they will bring about the Age of Electricity.
The story jumps four years ahead. Seiroku went to war and never returned. Kihachi now works alone at the Horai Buddhist Altar Shop, fixing machines and living a quiet life. He has lost faith in the dream he once shared with his brother.
One day, while fixing a gramophone at a temple, Kihachi meets Inako Momokawa. She is praying to speak with her deceased mother in Paradise. When Kihachi accidentally starts the gramophone, Inako believes it is a deity answering her prayers. The two have an awkward meeting, and Kihachi records her voice before leaving.
Meanwhile, Yosuke Mizoe, the heir to a wealthy steam engine company, arrives at Inako’s home. He proposes marriage to Inako as a way to settle her father’s debts. Her father accepts. Inako’s older sister, Noriko, tells her to run away and gives her the Electrical Catalog to deliver to Kihachi.
Inako reaches Kihachi’s shop but falls unconscious. She wakes up in a dark room and panics. Kihachi’s slideshow projector powers up, and Inako briefly believes she is in Paradise. The episode ends with Kihachi clearing up her confusion.
