Kihachi Sakamoto is a young boy who once dreamed of creating an “Age of Electricity” with his older brother Seiroku. They wrote down all their invention ideas in a special notebook called the 20th Century Electrical Catalog. But Seiroku went to war, took the catalog with him, and never came back.

Years later, Kihachi has become a doubtful and guarded person. He lost his belief in a better future. Then he meets Inako Momokawa, a girl from a local brewery. She also carries hidden pain about her late mother and keeps her own dreams secret.

When Kihachi finds the lost electrical catalog again, he and Inako team up to uncover its secrets. But Yosuke Mizoe, the rich heir to a big steam engine company, wants the book for himself. He is also engaged to Inako for political reasons. Yosuke knows things about the catalog that only Kihachi’s dead brother knew.

Who Is Making the Series

Kyoto Animation handles the animation production. The studio has a strong reputation for high-quality visuals and emotional storytelling from shows like A Silent Voice and Violet Evergarden.

The creative team includes:

  • Minoru Ota โ€“ Director (this is his first time as a director)
  • Tatsuhiko Urahata โ€“ Script and series composition
  • Kohei Okamura โ€“ Character design
  • Hitomi Koto โ€“ Music composer

The story comes from a novel called 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku written by Hiro Yuki.

What Makes This Anime Special

Director Minoru Ota shared his thoughts about the show:

“We aimed to create a work that would be recognized as a masterpiece. Regeneration is the theme. The characters begin from a place of setback or stagnation. As the story progresses, they overcome these obstacles, breaking free and rising once more.”

The art style uses a painting technique that gives the backgrounds a rough, brushstroke look. This creates a matte finish different from other Kyoto Animation shows. The director wanted the backgrounds to feel real and dirty, matching a city covered in smoke and mud.

The show also uses long, continuous camera shots instead of quick cuts. This makes character movements easier to follow and adds to the action scenes.

What Fans Think So Far

Social media reactions have been mostly positive after the trailer release. Many viewers praise Kyoto Animation’s visual quality and emotional storytelling style. The steampunk setting combined with Japanese history is drawing interest from anime fans looking for something different in the 2026 season.
