Park, who is herself colorblind, used this personal experience as a subtle clue throughout the series. Ramona’s mismatched socks seemed like a small character detail at first. But when Annie mentioned that she organises her father Steven’s socks because he is also colorblind, the pieces started to fall into place.
Ramona asked Steven to take a paternity test. The results confirmed that Steven, Annie’s adoptive father, was actually Ramona’s biological father. This revelation hit Annie hard. “Annie’s reaction was natural, even if it wasn’t what viewers would expect,” Park told Deadline. “Many viewers might expect Annie to feel even closer to Ramona after learning she is her real sister and biologically related to the family through both of her parents. However, Annie, instead of feeling closer and getting happy, begins to feel like she is the outsider in her own family for the first time.”
Park explained that she wanted to explore how people can have different reactions to family, biology, and adoption. This emotional shift was the right way to separate the sisters by the end of the season.
How the Sisterhood Swap Unfolded
The finale showed both sisters grappling with their identity and their connection to Sterling Point. Annie, who had come to the island searching for answers about her mother, found herself drawn to the slower pace of life there. Park wanted the paternity reveal to feel natural rather than like a dramatic twist. She and her co-showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo behind Gossip Girl and The O.C., worked to plant seeds throughout the season that would pay off emotionally.
“We wanted the reveal that Steven is the biological dad to be a subtle thing that didn’t feel like a ‘dun dun dun.’ Because we knew the trope of a paternity test, it can be totally played in a very different way. We wanted it to feel real and natural,” Park told Deadline.
