What Happened in Season 1?

Sugar premiered in April 2024 and quickly became one of television’s most surprising genre mashups. The first season followed John Sugar, a private investigator searching for a missing young woman connected to a powerful Hollywood family. However, the show’s biggest twist came toward the end of the season, when viewers learned that Sugar and several of his associates were not ordinary humans at allโ€”they were aliens living among mankind.

At the conclusion of Season 1, Sugar’s fellow extraterrestrials departed Earth for their home planet, but Sugar chose to remain in Los Angeles, truly alone for the first time. This revelation completely altered the show’s mythology and set the stage for a more personal and emotionally complex second season.

What to Expect in Season 2

Season 2 finds Sugar still working as a private investigator in Los Angeles while continuing his deeply personal search for his missing sister. According to Apple TV’s official synopsis:

“Sugar returns for a new case, tracking the troubled older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer as his search for his beloved missing sister continues. As the investigation expands into a citywide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question โ€” how far will he go to do what’s right?”

The new season introduces an almost entirely new ensemble of characters. Up-and-coming boxer Danny Moon (Jin Ha) hires Sugar to find his missing brother, Ji Moon (Raymond Lee), a drug addict who has disappeared after stealing some drugs. As Sugar begins investigating, he uncovers a more complex conspiracy involving decorated police officer Ray Vega (Tony Dalton) and the displacement of Los Angeles’ homeless population.

The season also adds new allies for Sugar, including a fellow investigator (Shea Whigham) and a street-smart new employee, Val (Sasha Calle). Additionally, Sugar develops a romance with Charlotte Fischer (Laura Donnelly), a resident of his hotel whose retro style matches his love for old noir films. The investigation also connects to the fallout from his Season 1 case in intriguing ways that broaden the connection between both seasons.

Early reviews suggest Season 2 may be an improvement over the first, with a more layered mystery and deeper exploration of Sugar’s alien identity.
