Euphoria fans are fighting online over one wild scene from the latest episode where Sydney Sweeney‘s character Cassie turns into a giant monster walking through Los Angeles.

The scene, which viewers have nicknamed “Cassiezilla,” appears in Episode 5 of Euphoria Season 3. Some fans think it is the best moment of the whole season. Others say it went on too long and felt uncomfortable to watch.

Sweeney herself called the sequence “the coolest thing I’ve ever done” in a behind-the-scenes video about the episode.

What Happens in the ‘Cassiezilla’ Scene

In the scene, Cassie Howard grows into a giant woman wearing a tight leopard-print outfit. She walks through a miniature version of Los Angeles while tiny humans run away in fear.

At one point, she swats a police helicopter out of the sky. She also finds a small man in an office building watching her adult content. Cassie questions him before using her body to smash him away.

The scene takes ideas from the 1958 movie Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Godzilla films. That is why fans started calling the giant version of Cassie “Cassiezilla.”

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson said the production team spent about one year building the miniature city used in the scene. Sweeney added that “the details were unbelievable. There were trees and cars and the buildings were my size.”

Why Fans Are Split Over the Scene

Many viewers loved the bold and unusual direction. One fan wrote on X:

“The whole Cassiezilla part of Euphoria is probably the best thing they’ve done all season. It’d be nice if the rest of the show didn’t feel like a bizarro universe Elmore Leonard novel.”

But other fans had the opposite reaction. A different X user posted:

“Sam Levinson, what the actual f**k was that Cassiezilla scene?”

Some critics argue the scene goes against what Euphoria used to be about. One Reddit post said the show claims to criticize how society uses women’s bodies but then does the same thing by focusing too much on Cassie’s looks instead of her feelings.

Another viewer on X complained:

“The Cassiezilla Euphoria bit lasted way too long. His people spent a year building that set. He just couldn’t bear to reduce its destruction to the 10 seconds of screen time it deserved.”

Cassie’s Season 3 Storyline Has Divided Viewers All Along

The giant monster Cassiezilla scene is not the first time Euphoria Season 3 has made fans argue about Cassie.

Earlier in the season, viewers watched Cassie start an OnlyFans account to pay for her wedding to Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. The storyline includes scenes where Cassie makes adult content, including one where she dresses like a baby with a pacifier.

Some viewers say the show is putting Sweeney through a “humiliation ritual” instead of giving her real character growth.

Chloe Cherry, who plays Faye on Euphoria and has real experience as an OnlyFans model, told Refinery29 the storyline feels strange. She said:

“It just feels crazy as fk to see somebody living like Cassie turn to sex work. It’s like, holy st, that’s where we’re at in society?”

In Episode 5, Cassie also appears on podcasts saying that “American men have been treated like second-class citizens.” When a host says she sounds like a Democrat, Cassie replies with a rude remark. Fans online joked that Sweeney was “method acting” because the actress has faced similar political questions in real life.

Sweeney Defends Her Work on the Show

Sydney Sweeney has spoken up many times about the criticism. She told The Independent there is a double standard in Hollywood.

“When a guy has a sex scene or shows his body, he still wins awards and gets praise. But the moment a girl does it, it’s completely different.”

She also said Levinson never pushed her into nude scenes. “When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me,” she explained.

About the Cassiezilla moment, Sweeney told HuffPost UK:

“The Cassie-zilla sequence was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I think, for Cassie, she knows what she’s chasing and what she’s going to sacrifice to give herself over to Hollywood.”

Euphoria Season 3 airs new episodes every Monday on HBO and Max in the US. In the UK, the show streams on Sky and Now. Indian viewers can watch on JioHotstar.
