The first season of Task arrived on HBO in September 2025. It got strong feedback from both critics and regular viewers. The show holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many people think it will be a strong competitor at the Emmy Awards this year. The network renewed the show for a second season in November 2025.

Edgar Ramirez Plays a DEA Agent Torn Between Duty and Guilt

Ramirez will play the role of Miguel Contreras. The official character description calls him “a devoted family man and loyal DEA second-in-command torn between duty and guilt.”

This role fits well with the show’s main theme. The series looks at how people in law enforcement struggle with right and wrong choices. Contreras works for the DEA. His job puts him in hard situations. He must balance his family life with the demands of his work.

Ramirez brings a lot of experience to this part. He has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes. All four nominations came from playing real-life people in lead roles. His past TV work includes Dr. Death. He has also been in movies like Emilia Perez, Les Arenas, and Jungle Cruise.

Mark Ruffalo Leads a New Task Force with Fresh Faces

Mark Ruffalo returns as Tom Brandis, the FBI agent leading the special team. The official story for season two says: “Tom Brandis takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”

The first season ended with big changes. Brandis lost some team members. One person on his team turned out to be working against them. Now he must build a new group of agents he can trust.

Mahershala Ali joins the show as Eddie Barnes. He plays a DEA agent in Philadelphia. His character’s team will clash with Brandis’s unit. This sets up a power struggle between two different law enforcement groups.

The Show Comes from the Creator of ‘Mare of Easttown’

Brad Inglesby created Task. He also wrote the show and serves as the showrunner. Inglesby is known for making Mare of Easttown, another hit crime drama for HBO.

Ruffalo works as an executive producer on the show in addition to playing the lead role. Other executive producers include Paul Lee, Mark Roybal, Jeremiah Zagar, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Karen Wacker serve as co-executive producers.
