Director Matt Reeves has given Batman fans their first real look at Robert Pattinson returning as the Dark Knight. The director shared a short camera test clip on July 15, 2026, showing Pattinson in full Batman gear standing in the rain. But the good news came with a catch. Warner Bros. has once again delayed the movie’s release. The Batman: Part II will now open in theaters on February 18, 2028.

The sequel was originally set to come out in October 2025. It then moved to October 2026, then October 2027. This marks the third time the film’s release date has changed. The movie will now arrive nearly six years after the first The Batman hit theaters in March 2022.

New Camera Test Footage Shows Batman in the Rain

The newly released clip runs about 30 seconds. It starts with a black screen. Then viewers see Robert Pattinson as Batman standing in the rain. Police sirens and officers talking on walkie-talkies play in the background. The Caped Crusader turns and stares directly into the camera.

Matt Reeves posted the video on Vimeo and shared it on his social media accounts. The footage also shows a new red logo for the sequel. Fans noticed that the ears on Pattinson’s Batsuit look longer than in the first film. Reeves confirmed this change on social media.

The camera test gives audiences a sense of the movie’s winter setting. Reeves had earlier shared behind-the-scenes photos that confirmed the sequel takes place during winter. This matches the snowy atmosphere seen in the new footage.

Why Warner Bros. Delayed the Movie Again

Warner Bros. moved The Batman: Part II to February 2028 for several reasons. Matt Reeves reportedly needs more time for production and post-production work. The sequel is a visual effects-heavy film that requires extensive work after filming ends.

The studio also made a strategic scheduling decision. J.J. Abrams’ new movie The Great Beyond took over the October 2027 release slot. That film received strong reactions from test screenings. Warner Bros. decided to give it an IMAX 70mm release, which needs extra preparation time. The studio moved The Great Beyond from November 2026 to October 1, 2027. This pushed The Batman: Part II to February 18, 2028.

The new February date falls over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. This four-day period has worked well for other superhero movies in the past. Black Panther also launched in February and became a huge success.

Returning Cast Members and New Additions

Robert Pattinson leads the cast as Bruce Wayne aka Batman. Several actors from the first film are coming back:

  • Jeffrey Wright returns as Jim Gordon
  • Andy Serkis is back as Alfred Pennyworth
  • Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oz Cobb / The Penguin
  • Jayme Lawson returns as Mayor Bella Reál
  • Gil Perez-Abraham comes back as Officer Martinez

The sequel also adds some big names to the cast:

  • Scarlett Johansson joins as Gilda Dent
  • Sebastian Stan plays Harvey Dent
  • Charles Dance takes on the role of Charles Dent
  • Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch are also part of the cast, though their roles remain unknown

There are rumors that Sebastian Stan might actually be playing serial killer Victor Zsasz instead of Harvey Dent. The production team has not confirmed these details.

What We Know About the Story

Plot details for The Batman: Part II remain mostly under wraps. The sequel will continue Bruce Wayne’s investigation into Gotham City’s corruption. The story picks up after the events of The Penguin spin-off series, which aired in 2024.

The winter setting suggests a different tone from the first film, which began on Halloween. A snow-covered Gotham City creates a strong visual contrast with Batman’s dark style.

Fans have speculated about possible villains. Some believe the movie might feature The Court of Owls, a secret organization from the DC comics. Others think Barry Keoghan could return as The Joker. These remain unconfirmed rumors.

Behind-the-Scenes Changes

The Batman: Part II has faced some production changes. Cinematographer Greig Fraser, who worked on the first film, had a scheduling conflict. Erik Messerschmidt has taken over as director of photography. The new camera test footage gives audiences a first look at Messerschmidt’s visual style.

Filming began in the UK in June 2026. The production continues to move forward despite the release date delays.

Matt Reeves co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin. The film comes from production companies DC Studios, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the movie.

The sequel is part of DC’s Elseworlds line of films. These movies exist outside the main DC Universe continuity.
