The explosive world of The Boys might not be done yet after its upcoming season finale. With season four hitting screens recently, fans are already looking ahead, and thanks to some playful social media exchanges between actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan and showrunner Eric Kripke, a new spin-off focusing on Morgan’s character could be in the works.
While The Boys, inspired by the comic books of the same name, is confirmed to end its main story after season five, Kripke has hinted that the franchise could live on through spin-offs set in the same dark and satirical superhero universe. There’s already buzz around existing spin-offs like the college-based Gen V, which recently concluded its first season and is greenlit for a second. Additionally, The Boys: Mexico is also in early development.
But the recent online interaction between Morgan and Kripke has fans particularly excited about the possibility of a brand new spin-off centered around Morgan’s character, Joe Kessler, a friend of Billy Butcher (played by Karl Urban).
Kripke on Creating a Perfect Foil for Butcher
In a recent interview, Kripke spoke about the initial concept behind Kessler and his role in Butcher’s life. “We knew Butcher was a bit of a maniac,” Kripke explained, “and most people around him try to keep him in check.” However, the creators wanted to introduce a character who wouldn’t just restrain Butcher, but potentially push him even further.
“We thought, ‘What a combustible nightmare that would be!’” Kripke said. “Basically, we needed another Butcher, but that’s no easy feat. You need another leading man, someone with charisma and talent to match Karl Urban, so they can really go head-to-head.”
That’s when fate intervened, according to Kripke. “Luckily, Jeffrey happened to text me right around the time we were developing this character,” he revealed. “We’d been wanting to find a role for him for a while, and the timing just worked out perfectly.”
Kripke Opens the Door to a “Jeffrey Dean Boys” Spin-off
When asked if the early episodes of season four were setting the stage for a “Jeffrey Dean Boys” spin-off, Kripke didn’t dismiss the idea. “Hey, man,” he said, “if Jeffrey’s up for it, and it works out, who wouldn’t want to see a Jeffrey Dean Boys spin-off?”
Morgan, ever the enthusiastic participant, quickly responded on social media, playfully acknowledging Kripke’s comment. “Ha! Kripke! Don’t play with my emotions!” he wrote. “You know I’m in. Sign me the hell up! (Checking schedule right now!)”
The Future of The Boys Universe
With Kripke expressing his belief that spin-offs within The Boys universe “can and should” continue, fans can expect the franchise to expand beyond the main storyline. While The Boys’ core narrative might wrap up with season five, the world Kripke has created seems ripe for further exploration, and a potential “Jeffrey Dean Boys” spin-off is just one exciting possibility on the horizon.
