Netflix’s upcoming K-drama The East Palace is bringing together an exciting cast of fan-favorite Korean actors. The supernatural thriller, set to premiere on July 17, 2026, follows a spirit-hunting swordsman and a court lady who can hear the dead as they uncover a dark curse within the royal palace. The series blends historical palace politics with eerie fantasy elements.
The story begins with the mysterious death of a crown prince in a palace pond. Rumors spread that a vengeful spirit has returned to destroy the King’s bloodline. What follows is a chilling investigation where the living and the dead collide.
Nam Joo-hyuk as Gu-cheon: The Spirit Hunter
Nam Joo-hyuk stars as Gu-cheon, a highly skilled swordsman who hunts and defeats spirits. Unlike ordinary humans, Gu-cheon can move between the world of the living and the Realm of Gwi, the spirit realm. He can even enter a ghost-like state that helps him confront supernatural beings directly.
Armed with a special sword capable of killing spirits, Gu-cheon is summoned to the palace by the King. His mission is to figure out what kind of curse has been placed on the East Palace. But as he steps into the palace, he quickly realizes this investigation will be far more dangerous than he expected.
The teaser trailer shows Gu-cheon entering the Realm of Gwi through a pond, cutting through spectral attackers with his sword. His voice cuts through the chaos with a warning: “Those who sin are punished eventually.”
Nam Joo-hyuk is known for popular dramas like Twenty-Five Twenty-One, Start-Up, and Vigilante. He also starred in the supernatural series The School Nurse Files.
Roh Yoon-seo as Saeng-gang: The Court Lady Who Hears Ghosts
Roh Yoon-seo plays Saeng-gang, a court lady who has spent her life hearing the voices of the dead. Instead of seeing this ability as a gift, she views it as a burden that has isolated her from others.
However, when the investigation at the palace begins, Saeng-gang has no choice but to use this power. She pairs up with Gu-cheon to uncover secrets that no one else can access. While he handles confrontations, she helps by connecting with the dead and discovering hidden clues.
“She considers her ability a lifelong curse, but using her special ability, she tries to uncover the secret of the palace with Gu-cheon.”
Roh Yoon-seo is a rising star in the K-drama world. She has appeared in films and shows like Hear Me: Our Summer, 20th Century Girl, and Crash Course in Romance. This role is expected to create another “career-defining character” for her.
Cho Seung-woo as the King: A Ruler With Hidden Motives
Cho Seung-woo joins the cast as the King of East Palace. He is the one who brings Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang together to investigate the curse. The King initially dismisses the deaths as a conspiracy, but that changes when his last remaining son collapses.
While he may genuinely want to protect his kingdom, there are hints that he could be hiding information or pursuing his own interests. Netflix has described his motives as “complex and hard to ascertain.”
Cho Seung-woo is a veteran actor known for acclaimed dramas like Divorce Attorney Shin, Life, and Secret Forest.
Supporting Cast and Creative Team
The supporting cast includes Park Su-yeon as the Queen. Her presence will help viewers understand palace politics and may reveal more about the King’s true character. Jang Young-nam also plays a key supporting role. Additional cast members include Kang Myoung-soo as a musician and Chloe Park in a minor role.
The series is created by an experienced team. Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won wrote the scripts. They previously worked on Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest, both known for weaving Korean occultism into their stories. Choi Jung-kyu, who directed The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody, serves as director.
