A new Hong Kong action film is making a huge noise with critics. The Furious, an English-language action movie, opened with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie premiered at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 6, 2025, and it has been turning heads ever since. Action fans who love brutal, well-choreographed fights are calling it a must-see event.
The film comes from Kenji Tanigaki, a famous action choreographer who stepped into the director’s chair. Unlike big-budget Hollywood films, The Furious did not have a massive marketing campaign. It also does not rely on famous Hollywood names. Instead, it lets the action speak for itself. The result is a movie that some reviewers are already calling an “instant masterpiece”.
A Perfect Score That Rivals Genre Greats
The math is simple but impressive. Out of all the reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes so far, every single one has been positive. This gives The Furious a rare and perfect score. Reviewers are comparing it to the best work from Hong Kong’s golden age of action in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
One review from Toisto.net said the film has one simple goal: to deliver an all-time great action film using some of the best genre actors working today. The review stated that the movie is an unconditional, brilliant success.
The Verge’s Andrew Webster pointed out that each fight sequence is both brutal and beautiful. He noted an inventiveness and playfulness to the violence that makes it stand out. This mix of hard hits and clever choreography is what sets it apart from regular action movies.
A Violent Blend of ‘The Raid’ and ‘John Wick’
Fans have been waiting for a movie that captures the energy of The Raid and John Wick. Many believe The Furious finally delivers that. The story follows an everyday man who teams up with a journalist to find his kidnapped daughter. Their search leads them through a bloody path of criminals and martial arts masters.
The cast is packed with incredible fighters. It stars Mo Tse as the desperate father, Joe Taslim as the journalist, and Yayan Ruhian, who fans will recognize from both The Raid and John Wick franchises. The trailer shows a hallway fight that gives off strong Oldboy vibes, along with people using hammers in very violent ways.
Social media reactions are calling it “brutal” and “relentless.” A recent report from June 10, 2025, confirms the film currently holds a 7.6/10 on IMDb and a 3.7/5 on Letterboxd, which are very strong scores for an action film. The movie is set for wide release in North America starting June 12, 2026.
The Story Behind the Violence
The Furious runs for 113 minutes. The English-language Hong Kong production is a revenge-driven narrative. It brings together fighters from different martial arts backgrounds, including Jeeja Yanin and Brian Le.
The director, Kenji Tanigaki, has a long history of designing fights for other directors. Now that he is in control, he focuses on high-stakes action. The plot involves a mysterious criminal organization and a showdown that fans are calling the best part of the movie.
A Watershed Moment for Action Movies
Critics agree that The Furious is not just a good movie. It is being talked about as a turning point for the genre. For years, fans have wanted a movie that combines the emotional weight of John Wick with the raw, desperate fighting of The Raid.
The Furious reportedly does exactly that. One critic suggested that in the coming years, this film will be looked back on as a major event. The advice to audiences is simple: watch it on the biggest screen possible. The choreography is so precise and the action so constant that seeing it in a theater is the best way to experience it.
