The KBS2 crime thriller The Husband has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats since its July 4 premiere. The show follows Kang Tae-ju, a successful neurosurgeon and hospital director, whose wife gets kidnapped right after they agree to divorce. What starts as a desperate rescue mission turns into a much larger conspiracy involving hospital corruption, medical cover-ups, and dangerous criminals. Episode 9, which aired on August 1, delivered some major revelations and ended with a tense cliffhanger that has everyone talking.
The series stars Namgoong Min as Kang Tae-ju, Lee Seol as his wife Ko Se-yun, and Kim Dae-myung as kidnapper Noh Man-hee. The show airs every Saturday and Sunday on KBS2 at 9:20 PM KST and streams on Disney+ for international audiences.
Episode 9 Rating Hits New High
The Husband continues to grow in popularity. Episode 9 recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 7.6 percent, according to Nielsen Korea. The highest rating per minute reached 8.9 percent, setting a new record for the drama. The series started with a 4.4 percent rating for its premiere but has steadily climbed through strong performances and a fast-moving mystery.
Tae-ju Uncovers a Larger Conspiracy
Episode 9 shows Tae-ju becoming convinced that the truth behind Dr. Ha’s death is more complicated than what the police believe. While investigators concluded that Dr. Ha orchestrated the unethical medical practices and recruited Man-hee and Gyeongae to kidnap Se-yun, Tae-ju thinks otherwise. Based on everything he has uncovered, he believes Dr. Ha was only a pawn in a much larger conspiracy rather than the mastermind.
Tae-ju starts focusing on his father-in-law, suspecting he may be pulling the strings from behind. He also believes Dr. Ko is involved in the conspiracy and planned everything. Tae-ju does not agree with the official ending of Dr. Ha’s death because he thinks Gyeongae’s testimony that Ha was the mastermind might not tell the whole truth.
Police Investigation Raises Doubts
Senior detective Do-sik also begins questioning the investigation. He notices that the evidence against Dr. Ha appears almost too perfect. This leads him to suspect that a powerful figure may have manipulated the case to reach a convenient conclusion. Do-sik openly admits to Tae-ju that something feels wrong. Rather than celebrating the case being closed, he suspects someone higher up is still manipulating the investigation.
Tae-ju does not respond much, but his silence speaks volumes. He already knows who the real mastermind is. The question remains whether Do-sik will find the truth through Tae-ju’s help or through other evidence.
The Heartbreaking Truth About Gyeongae
One of the most disturbing revelations in episode 9 involves Gyeongae’s past. For years, she believed that she did not receive a surgery because of her criminal past. However, the truth is much worse. Her application was rejected because the hospital was not gaining any financial benefit from her.
Tae-ju and Se-yun discover that the hospital only prioritized patients connected to hospital sponsors. The applications all belonged to hospital donors, and the pattern was impossible to ignore. Gyeongae was not rejected because of her past mistakes but because she lacked financial value to the hospital.
Realizing what happened, Tae-ju said:
“Hope was not the standard. Money was.”
Gyeongae feels devastated after hearing the truth. She was not simply abandoned by the healthcare system but became another victim of a corrupt system that values money over human life. Tae-ju later informed Gyeongae that her past record was not even included in her application, raising new questions about why she was rejected and who may have misled her.
Myung-hee’s True Nature Comes Out
Myung-hee, who came across as a good person in earlier episodes, shows a different side in episode 9. She purposely checks up on Se-yun in a way that makes it sound like Tae-ju is tired of everything. When Se-yun wonders why Myung-hee calls Tae-ju “oppa,” Myung-hee slyly adds that Tae-ju has been visiting her office to rant. This makes Se-yun think her husband has been seeing another woman.
Meanwhile, Myung-hee comes under increasing suspicion. During questioning, Do-sik reveals he has reviewed surveillance footage of the elevator. He tells her that Dr. Ha, who pressed the button to the top floor, somehow changed it to the basement after she said something to him. Do-sik traces her lips and figures she said “well done” to Dr. Ha. But Myung-hee states the footage does not have audio and that Do-sik’s analysis is not accurate.
Investigators also found evidence of earlier communication between Myung-hee and Kim Kyung Ae, leading to further questions about her possible involvement in the conspiracy.
Man-hee’s Rage and the Deadly Cliffhanger
Noh Man-hee remains unaware of everything that has happened. He has escaped the authorities and is worried about Gyeongae’s condition. He is afraid of losing her, and that fear is gradually consuming him.
His bottled-up grief and frustration finally explode when a grocery store owner casually mentions Gyeongae after seeing the news. The comment was not meant to provoke him, but Man-hee could not control himself and ended up killing the man right there. He still wants revenge and steps into the hospital with a knife.
Once he spots Se-yun, he immediately rushes toward her, believing she is responsible for everything that happened to him and Gyeongae. At the same time, Tae-ju realizes that Se-yun might need his help and rushes to save her.
The episode ends on a deadly cliffhanger just as viewers are about to see what happens next.
