The upcoming fourth movie in The Mummy franchise keeps adding familiar faces to its cast. Universal Pictures is bringing back Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor for the new film, joining previously confirmed stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The movie arrives in theaters on October 15, 2027.
Returning Cast Members From The Original Films
Fehr played Ardeth Bay, the leader of the Medjai warriors who protect the world from ancient evils. He appeared in the first two Mummy movies. O’Connor portrayed Beni Gabor, a greedy thief who betrays Rick O’Connell during the 1999 film.
The two actors join a cast that already includes Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell. John Hannah is also coming back as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan Carnahan. Weisz did not appear in the third movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), where Maria Bello played the role instead.
Fraser spoke about the movie during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He said:
“We’re gonna get the band back together. The only way to do it. So, we’re going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for, for the last 20-whatever years.”
The actor also mentioned he is working hard to prepare for the role.
“Please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape.”
New Faces Joining The Mummy Franchise
The fourth film will also introduce some new cast members. Numan Acar, known for his work in Homeland and Spider-Man: Far From Home, has joined the project in an undisclosed role. Michael Johnston, who gained attention in Obsession, is also in talks to appear.
Directors And Creative Team Behind The Sequel
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known as Radio Silence, are helming the project. They previously directed Scream (2022) and Ready or Not. Gillett called the film a “dream project” and described the script by David Coggeshall as:
“Really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome.”
Bettinelli-Olpin added that Fraser and Weisz only agreed to return because they loved the script.
The movie reportedly ignores the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and serves as a direct sequel to The Mummy Returns (2001).
Release Date Change Brings Movie Closer
The fourth Mummy movie was originally scheduled for May 19, 2028. Universal Pictures moved the date forward to October 15, 2027, almost a full year earlier. The change happened when another Universal film, Miami Vice ’85, took the May 2028 slot.
The new October release puts the movie in the Halloween season, which fits the franchise’s supernatural theme.
Fans React To The Casting News
Social media users have responded to the announcements with excitement. Many fans are now asking for Arnold Vosloo to return as the villain Imhotep. Vosloo played the mummy in the first two films.
One user wrote:
“I understand Oded and don’t mind, but if Kevin is returning, then bring back Arnold Vosloo as well.”
Another fan asked:

Some viewers expressed surprise about O’Connor’s return because his character Beni died in the first movie. Scarab beetles trapped him inside a tomb. However, the franchise deals heavily with resurrection, making his return possible within the story’s rules.

Brendan Fraser’s Long Wait For The Sequel
Fraser has been open about wanting to make another Mummy movie for years. He told the Associated Press:
“The one I wanted to make was never made… I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”
The actor also shared his thoughts with IndieWire about the fan demand for a new film:
“If my lips weren’t sealed, I would confirm everything that you already know. However, I’m hopeful. I know that there are a lot of fans who would love to see this happen… This generation, by your own description, have kids of their own now. So they’re introducing them to what they watched when they were kids.”

The movie brings back the original cast members who made the 1999 film a hit. Fraser and Weisz lead the adventure series that started more than 25 years ago. The franchise launched Fraser as a major action star and gave Weisz her breakthrough role.
The fourth film marks the first time Fraser and Weisz have worked together on a Mummy project since 2001. The movie also continues the franchise tradition of mixing action, horror, and comedy.
