Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey is arriving in theaters this week, and it already has something going for it that his previous blockbuster Oppenheimer did not have. The film does not have to compete with another major studio release on the same weekend. This gives Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem a much clearer path to audiences compared to the 2023 biographical drama.

Oppenheimer famously shared its release date with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, creating the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon that became one of the most talked-about box office moments in modern Hollywood. The viral trend helped both movies, with Oppenheimer earning $330.1 million in the United States and Canada and $646.7 million in other territories. However, the film had to compete for IMAX showtimes, media attention, and moviegoers’ time. The Odyssey does not face that challenge.

The Advantage of Having No Blockbuster Rival

With no major release scheduled to open directly against The Odyssey on July 17, the film is expected to have a much smoother run than Oppenheimer. This gives Nolan’s mythological epic a valuable opportunity to dominate premium formats like IMAX and large-format screens from day one.

This advantage matters greatly for Nolan, whose films are designed with immersive theatrical presentation in mind. According to Deadline, The Odyssey is expected to debut with an opening frame of $85 million to $100 million domestically and $110 million overseas.

Christopher Nolan’s Most Ambitious Project Yet

The Odyssey carries a reported production budget of $250 million, making it Nolan’s most expensive film to date, tied with The Dark Knight Rises. This is more than twice the budget of Oppenheimer, which was made for about $100 million.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

The story follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, on his long journey home following the Trojan War. The film chronicles his encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and the nymph Calypso, while he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope.

Nolan Credits Oppenheimer’s Success for Making The Odyssey Possible

During an appearance on The Daily Show, Nolan surprised viewers when he revealed that Oppenheimer‘s success motivated him to work on Homer’s Greek epic. Speaking to host Jon Stewart, Nolan said:

“Oppenheimer had way more success than I think we had any right to expect. That gives you an opportunity to get something made that you might not otherwise be able to get made.”

One might think it would be easy for a filmmaker like Nolan, known for iconic films such as Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, and Dunkirk, to make a big-budget Greek epic. However, as Nolan explained, it was only after Oppenheimer‘s unexpected triumph at the box office that gave him the confidence to adapt Odysseus’s journey for the big screen.

Jon Stewart questioned why a filmmaker with such an impressive resume would still need to persuade a studio to finance a project. Nolan responded:

“I think it helped that it was very successful. I think the Oscar thing helped. I think it all helped to go to the studio and say, because being The Odyssey, it needs a massive budget. It needs a massive cast. It needs a lot.”

Oppenheimer became one of the biggest films of 2023, earning nearly $1 billion at the global box office and winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

The Odyssey Runtime and Production Details

The Odyssey has a runtime of 2 hours and 53 minutes, making it shorter than Oppenheimer, which ran for three hours. Nolan confirmed this during an interview, saying:

“It’s an epic film, as the subject matter demands. But it is shorter.”

The film was shot entirely for IMAX, making it the first film in history to achieve such a feat. Production wrapped ahead of schedule. Nolan revealed that they had a 100-day shooting schedule but finished in just 91 days, noting that the cast and crew had reached their absolute limit by the end of filming.

Early Reviews and Box Office Expectations

The Odyssey has already received positive reviews from critics who watched the film earlier this month. The film premiered on July 6, 2026, at the Empire Leicester Square in London, ahead of its worldwide theatrical release.

In India, trade experts expect The Odyssey to surpass Oppenheimer‘s opening day collections. Film distributor and industry expert Akshaye Rathi said:

“We are definitely looking at Rs 20 crore plus opening date and a weekend that can potentially go beyond the Rs 75 crore mark.”

Oppenheimer set a high benchmark in India with an opening day collection of around Rs 14 crore. The aggressive promotional campaign and the presence of stars on the ground have transformed The Odyssey into one of the hottest cinematic properties in the country.

The Cast and Their Characters

The star-studded cast of The Odyssey brings together some of Hollywood’s biggest names:

  • Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the warrior king of Ithaca. Damon said he said yes before Nolan even told him what the project was.
  • Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’s wife. A self-confessed Greek mythology geek, Hathaway said Penelope had “so much fire and passion.”
  • Tom Holland plays Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. Holland described his first day of filming in Morocco as overwhelming.
  • Zendaya portrays Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. She said she felt like she had won the lottery when she got the call.
  • Robert Pattinson plays the suitor Antinous, Charlize Theron plays Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o plays Helen of Troy.

The Odyssey Release Date and Where to Watch

The Odyssey releases in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026. The film is distributed by Universal Pictures and will be available in IMAX and large-format screens.

The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time. Nolan, Damon, and Holland recently visited Mumbai for the Indian premiere, drawing large crowds during the film’s global promotional tour.

The Odyssey is scheduled for a theatrical release by Universal Pictures in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other territories.
