Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, revealing a darker chapter in the fantasy saga. The 99-second footage shows Sauron forging the One Ring inside Mount Doom, the arrival of Galadriel’s husband Celeborn, and multiple new characters joining the ensemble. Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11, 2026, with the first four episodes releasing together.
Sauron Takes Centre Stage in Season 3
Charlie Vickers returns as Sauron, and the new season shows the Dark Lord in his full villainous form after two seasons of concealing his identity. The teaser opens in a scorched, ash-covered Mordor, with lightning crashing around Barad-dûr as Sauron utters the line: “Now, is the mighty hour come”.
The footage builds towards the forging of the One Ring, showing molten gold as Sauron works inside his newly completed tower. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed that the sequence includes one of the most ambitious shots attempted in the series so far. Vickers became emotional on his first day filming the sequence and shed tears while shooting it, a process that lasted nearly two weeks.
Season 3 takes place five years after the fall of Eregion, at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. Sauron’s armies have marched across Middle-earth, conquering all in their path. Only isolated pockets of resistance remain between the Dark Lord and total victory. The Dwarves have sealed themselves deep within Khazad-dûm, while Lindon and Rivendell remain protected by the Three Rings.
The official synopsis states: “Now, all the free peoples of Middle-earth — Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards alike — must find a way to come together, in a race against time to prevent Sauron from achieving his goal of utter domination of all life”.
Executive producer Patrick McKay told Reuters that the new season shifts to a darker, more dangerous Middle-earth. “We’re in a different place. Middle Earth is more dangerous than ever. Sauron is ruthless, relentless, and no one is safe,” McKay said. “When you have a villain like that, that is as dominant as Sauron is, it just creates a different tone. And certainly, we’re going darker places than the show has gone before”.
New Characters Join the Cast
Jamie Campbell Bower, known for playing Vecna in Stranger Things, joins the series as Celeborn, the long-missing husband of Galadriel. The teaser shows Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) dancing peacefully with Celeborn, marking his first appearance in the series after being referenced in earlier seasons. Bower described his character as a “lover boy” who will play an important part in the War of the Elves and Sauron.
Simon Pegg has been cast as the voice of the Balrog, marking the first time the creature will speak in the series. An in-room featurette showed several creatures appearing in Season 3, including Fell-beasts, the war elephants known as Mûmakil, Orcs, and the returning Balrog.
Eddie Marsan will play Thrain, the older brother of King Durin IV and father of Thorin Oakenshield. Andrew Richardson appears as Anarion, Elendil’s younger son and Isildur’s brother. Adam Young plays Marnûkh, a mysterious Orc whose identity “may not be what it seems”.
Zubin Varla joins as Khamûl the Easterling of Rhûn, one of the figures destined to become Sauron’s Ringwraiths.
The Nazgnagôl Make Their Debut
Season 3 will show the early origins of the Nazgûl, known as the Nazgnagôl, before they become Sauron’s Ringwraiths. The teaser includes the first look at these ring-servants, who are the Second Age incarnation of the spectral Nazgûl familiar from The Lord of the Rings.
During the Hall H session, four Nazgnagôl in full armour made a surprise appearance on stage as they awaited Sauron’s command. Showrunner J.D. Payne explained that since Nazgûl means “Ringwraith,” the show created Nazgnagôl, meaning “Ring-servant,” to describe them before they become full Ringwraiths.
Speaking about his character Khamûl and the Nazgnagôl, Zubin Varla said they slowly lose their humanity as they are corrupted by evil. Payne added that Khamûl does not see himself as a villain but as someone trying to regain the power and status he believes he deserves.
Gandalf Embraces His Identity
Daniel Weyman’s character, the Stranger, has finished discovering that he is Gandalf, allowing the show to move beyond the mystery surrounding his identity. The teaser shows the wizard stepping into a leadership role and warning others about the difficult road ahead. At one point, he calls out “Death,” describing what those who take on Sauron must be ready to face.
Weyman said the showrunners now want audiences to see him as “the wizard we all love from Tolkien’s writings”. However, this younger Gandalf still has plenty to learn before becoming the composed figure familiar from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.

The teaser presents a harsher vision of Middle-earth as Sauron’s power spreads and kingdoms prepare for conflict. Prime Video said Sauron’s effort to forge the One Ring is fully under way, and his attempt to control all of Middle-earth forces new alliances, some of them uneasy, to form against him.
As Sauron’s control grows, the trailer shows that only a few places remain safe. Alliances are strained as kingdoms struggle to endure. Durin, played by Owain Arthur, declares, “There are no friends of Mordor here,” as the Dwarves retreat into Khazad-dûm.
The season sets up a wider effort by Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Wizards to band together against the spreading darkness.
The first four episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 premiere on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. Episodes five and six arrive on November 18, and the final two episodes stream on November 25.
