ABC has locked in The Rookie for a ninth season, making it one of the network’s longest-running dramas. The official renewal arrived in April 2026, just weeks before the Season 8 finale. However, the show’s dedicated audience must wait until 2027 to see how the terrifying kidnapping of Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen gets resolved.

Season 8 ended on a brutal note for “Chenford” fans. Right after Tim proposed and Lucy said yes, the happy couple was taken by criminals linked to a man named Heath Everett. The finale did not show what happened next, leaving their survival completely uncertain.
This marks the third time the series has faced a major interruption in its schedule. While the show originally aired in the fall, it now sticks to a midseason release pattern. For global audiences, this means The Rookie Season 9 is likely landing in different windows depending on the region.

Expected Release Window and Where to Watch
ABC has not set a specific premiere date for Season 9. Based on the release history of the last three seasons—which all started in early January—industry experts predict the show will return the week of January 4, 2027.
The shift to midseason allows ABC to air the episodes with fewer random breaks. For viewers in the United States, the show will air on ABC and stream on Hulu the next day. UK and Ireland audiences usually get new episodes on Sky Max and NOW TV. In India, Australia, and Canada, the show streams on Disney+ under the Star banner, generally within 24 hours of the US broadcast.
Despite the long wait, the production timeline is standard. Nathan Fillion and the rest of the cast are expected to start filming in late 2026 to hit the January target.

The Season 8 Finale Cliffhanger: Who Lives and Who Leaves?
Creator Alexi Hawley has stated that the first item on the writing team’s agenda is resolving the kidnapping. He assured viewers that Tim and Lucy will not simply sit passively waiting for rescue.
The situation is complicated by the potential shakeup at the Mid-Wilshire station. Richard T. Jones, who plays Sergeant Wade Grey, spent Season 8 working on a special task force. With that task force ending because the villain Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) is dead, Grey’s future is up in the air.
“I am always looking for a fresh way… I also want it to be satisfying and dramatic. So one of the first things we got to figure out is what are we going to do with him that feels like growth.”
— Alexi Hawley, Showrunner, on Wade Grey’s Season 9 role
Hawley confirmed that no main cast members are leaving the show voluntarily. He told Deadline that the team values Richard T. Jones as a crucial part of the puzzle. However, he teased that Grey might not simply return to his old desk, but could take on a new, unknown role at the station.
The 150th Episode Milestone
Season 9 will be historic for the procedural drama. The series is set to air its 150th episode early in the upcoming season. This places The Rookie in rare company among broadcast TV shows that have survived past the 100-episode mark for syndication.
To reach this milestone, the cast and crew will have to deliver a season of at least 18 episodes, which has been the standard for recent cycles. This guarantees plenty of time to deal with the aftermath of the abduction, the potential “Chenford” wedding, and the introduction of new rookie characters to replace those who graduated.

The “Chenford” Engagement and Future Plot Points
Season 9 will heavily focus on the relationship between Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil). The showrunner has a history of putting the couple through difficult times—specifically referencing the painful breakup they endured two seasons ago. While Hawley says he has no current plan to “kill off” a main character, he stressed that drama must come first.
Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) is also shifting careers after leaving the District Attorney’s office, which could put him on a collision course with new legal threats. Meanwhile, Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) and Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) remain active in the field, likely leading the hunt for Tim and Lucy.
