The 1991 psychological horror classic continues to collect major accolades more than three decades after its release. Jonathan Demmeโs masterpiece just received a huge honor from Collider, which called it the most perfect thriller movie of the last 50 years. The film also started streaming for free on Tubi starting May 1, 2026, giving a whole new generation of viewers easy access to this landmark picture.
The timing works perfectly with the filmโs 35th anniversary celebrations this year. Fans old and new can now watch Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in their Oscar-winning roles without paying anything, thanks to the ad-supported platform.
Why the Final Act Still Sets the Standard for Thrillers
Film schools still teach the last 20 minutes of this movie. The sequence where Clarice Starling walks alone through Buffalo Billโs dark basement remains a masterclass in building fear. The editing switches to the killerโs point of view using night-vision goggles, putting viewers right inside his perspective while Starling has no idea he can see her every move.
What makes this work so well is how simple it is. No fancy effects. No loud music telling you when to be scared. Just a young FBI trainee, a dark room, and a killer watching her through green-tinted lenses. The scene builds slowly, then explodes in gunfire when Starling finally figures out where to shoot.
Many crime shows like Criminal Minds and movies that came after borrowed from this blueprint. But none have matched the raw tension of that basement confrontation. The movie took home five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. That clean sweep of the top categories almost never happens, especially for a horror movie.
Hopkins and Foster Created Something Rare
Anthony Hopkins only appears on screen for about 16 minutes total. Yet his version of Dr. Hannibal Lecter became one of cinemaโs most unforgettable villains. He played the cannibal psychiatrist as polite, refined, and completely terrifying without raising his voice. Hopkins once said he modeled Lecter after a mix of Katharine Hepburn, Truman Capote, and the HAL 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Opposite him, Jodie Foster brought something different to the FBI trainee role. Clarice Starling does not solve the case by being tougher or stronger than the men around her. She uses her brain and her ability to understand people.
“She’s a woman who uses her wits and her sensitivity and her perspicacity and emotions and vulnerability. Somebody who is relentlessly five foot four. It’s the head and the heart that combat the villain. And I can’t think of any other more perfect feminine prototype for the woman who fights to save women.” – Jodie Foster in a 1991 Entertainment Tonight interview
Foster also talked about the strange connection between Clarice and Lecter. She said they both value dignity above everything else. The serial killer and the FBI trainee become completely intimate with each other during their conversations, even though they sit behind glass. Lecter figures out Clariceโs deepest insecurities and uses that knowledge to get inside her head.
What the Cast Is Doing Now
Jodie Foster continued winning awards throughout her career. She picked up another Oscar nomination for Nyad and won an Emmy for True Detective season 4. She also directed episodes of Black Mirror and starred in the 2026 French drama A Private Life.
Anthony Hopkins became a huge movie star after The Silence of the Lambs. He won a second Oscar for The Father in 2021 and played Odin in the Thor movies. He also released his autobiography We Did OK, Kid in 2025.
Ted Levine, who played Buffalo Bill, never let that role define his career. He worked with directors like Martin Scorsese (Shutter Island), Ridley Scott (American Gangster), and Michael Mann (Heat). Most TV fans know him as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer on Monk.
Scott Glenn played FBI boss Jack Crawford. He later appeared in Training Day, The Bourne Ultimatum, and as Stick in Marvelโs Daredevil. He also showed up in season 3 of The White Lotus.
Brooke Smith, who played kidnapped victim Catherine Martin, later became Dr. Erica Hahn on Greyโs Anatomy. She also appeared in Christopher Nolanโs Interstellar and the TV series Bosch.
A Stage Adaptation Is Coming to Theaters
Fans who want to experience this story in a new way can look forward to the world stage play premiere. The production will tour the UK and Ireland, opening at Leicesterโs Curve theatre. John Partridge, known for his role in EastEnders, will play Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The play was adapted by Gina Gionfriddo, who wrote for House of Cards and Law & Order.
Partridge talked about getting the role.
“How often does an actor get to play a role that by simply saying the characterโs name, it takes your breath away. Itโs a huge honour, and I intend to savour every morsel of it.” – John Partridge
The production will visit Salfordโs Lowry theatre from October 6 to 10, 2026.

The Movie Recently Returned to Theaters in 4K
Before landing on Tubi, The Silence of the Lambs played in theaters again for its 35th anniversary. Fathom Events presented a brand new 4K remaster on two nights, April 26 and April 29, 2026. Arrow Video also prepared a feature-packed 4K edition for home collectors.
The film still holds a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its influence shows up in nearly every serial killer story made since 1991. But no other movie has quite matched the balance of intelligence and pure fear that Jonathan Demme achieved with this picture.
