The first season of The Testaments ended on May 27, 2026, leaving viewers with a mix of heartbreak and hope. The Hulu series, which continues the story from The Handmaid’s Tale, delivered a finale that changed the lives of all the young characters. While some faced tragic losses, others found a new reason to fight.

Becka’s Mother Takes the Fall to Save Her Daughter

The biggest question going into the finale was the fate of Becka Grove (Mattea Conforti). In the previous episode, she killed her father, Doctor Grove (Randal Edwards), after discovering he abused her friends. The Eyes arrested her, and it looked like she would face the Wall.

Inside the prison, Becka was broken. She sat restrained in a cell, singing a children’s bible song over and over. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) visited her, hoping to find a way out. But Commander Judd wanted Becka to become a Handmaid or die.

The rescue plan came from the women around her. Agnes (Chase Infiniti) asked Commander Weston for help. Daisy (Lucy Halliday) pushed the group to act. Eventually, Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) made a hard choice. Becka’s mother (Kate Hewlett) agreed to confess to the murder.

It was a sad deal. Mrs. Grove said, “It’s what should’ve happened,” before taking the blame. Becka went free under watch, but her mother went to the gallows. The execution happened on the same day as Becka’s forced wedding.

Becka had to marry Garth (Brad Alexander) to stay safe. The wedding was cold and sad. Becka looked sedated and broken. Garth put her to bed and locked the door behind him. Since Garth is secretly a Mayday worker, viewers think Becka might join the resistance later.

Weston Ends Engagement With Agnes After Scandal

Commander Weston broke off his engagement with Agnes in the finale. He had promised to help Becka, and he kept that promise. But once the scandal with Doctor Grove became public, Weston wanted nothing to do with Agnes.

Agnes had told Weston that she was also a victim of Doctor Grove. This confession came back to hurt her. In Gilead, powerful men see victims as “soiled.” Weston called off the wedding to save his own name.

The breakup was actually a hidden freedom for Agnes. She no longer had to marry a man she did not love. But the cost was high. Without a husband, her place in Gilead became uncertain. Still, Agnes did not cry over the loss. She quickly turned to helping Garth marry Becka instead, giving up her own chance at love with him.

Later, Agnes found Paula (the Commander’s wife) drunk and scrubbing the floor. Paula was angry about the failed wedding. In her drunken state, she revealed that Gilead wanted to send Agnes’s body parts to her birth mother. This was the moment Agnes started to understand who she really was.

Margaret Atwood Makes a Surprise Cameo

Fans who watched closely spotted a major easter egg. Margaret Atwood, the author who wrote The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, appeared in the finale. She played a prison matron who escorted Aunt Lydia to see Becka.

Her line was short but strong. She told Aunt Lydia, “Don’t agitate her.” Then she walked away. The moment lasted only a few seconds, but fans went wild online. On Reddit, one viewer wrote, “I literally screamed MARGARET ATWOOD!!!”

Some fans missed the cameo completely. On Facebook, viewers asked each other where she was. The scene happens about five minutes into Episode 10. Atwood had teased the appearance before the show started. On her website, she wrote, “I have a cameo, though I can’t say as what, except that it’s scowly.”

This is not Atwood’s first time on screen. She also appeared in the first episode of The Handmaid’s Tale in 2017. In that scene, she played an Aunt who slapped June (Elisabeth Moss).

Daisy Reveals Agnes Is June’s Daughter

The biggest emotional moment came when Daisy met June face to face. June had come to pull Daisy out of Gilead. But Daisy refused to leave. She argued that her friends needed her. In the middle of the fight, Daisy mentioned Agnes.

June stopped cold. Her eyes filled with tears. Daisy realized the truth and said it out loud: Agnes is June’s daughter, Hannah. June confirmed it. Daisy told June that Agnes is “one of the bravest people I’ve ever met.” Those words gave June peace.

June let Daisy go back into Gilead. She knew her daughter was in good hands.

Daisy Chooses to Build an Army Instead of Escaping

The finale ended with a clear plan for season 2. Daisy decided she was not leaving Gilead. She wanted to stay and take down the system from the inside. She sent a hidden message to June inside a honey bottle lid.

The message said she came with one mission, but the women around her changed her mind. Now she wants to build an army. The final shot showed Daisy, Agnes, and Shunnamite walking through the school halls with their pinkies locked together. They are ready to fight.

Hulu announced the renewal for Season 2 on May 20, 2026, before the finale even aired. The show will continue the fight against Gilead with these young women leading the way.
