The Walking Dead: Dead City delivered one of its most shocking episodes yet with Season 3 Episode 7, titled “Hourglass.” The episode, which aired on Sunday, September 6, 2026, on AMC and AMC+, completely changed the game for Maggie and Negan. What started as a manhunt for Negan turned into something much bigger when a character who seemed harmless revealed himself as the season’s real threat.

Renata’s Shocking Death
The biggest moment of Episode 7 was the death of Renata, played by Aimee Garcia. Renata had been a strong leader in the Manhattan community since the season premiere, helping Maggie build a new life for survivors. But her story came to a sudden and violent end.
Renata wanted Negan punished for his actions, including killing Fabian. But her brother Luis convinced her to reconsider. She decided not to kill Negan and instead wanted to take him into custody, sticking to the rules she had been trying to build the community around.
Dillard, the bar owner who had been Negan’s friend, did not accept this decision. He stepped forward and said:
“You’re positively not in charge, because if you were, you could’ve stopped this.”
Then he shot Renata in the chest, killing her instantly. Luis watched his sister die before being knocked unconscious.
Speaking about her character’s death, Aimee Garcia told TV Insider:
“I feel like it’s such a compliment when you’re playing a character. You can only do so much in a season. If people care that you die, then you did your job.”
Garcia also explained that Renata’s hope and trust in humanity did not kill her. She said:
“It wasn’t her light, her hope, her trust in humanity. It was a wild card with an agenda who had a psychotic break.”
Dillard’s Betrayal Revealed
The episode also revealed the truth about Dillard’s facial injury. In the previous episode, it looked like Negan had slashed Dillard’s face. But Episode 7 showed that Dillard cut his own face and blamed Negan.
Why did Dillard do this? Negan had killed Dillard’s two walker companions – one by accident and one on purpose. Dillard had formed a bond with these walkers, treating them like friends during the apocalypse. When Negan took them away, Dillard’s grief turned into a need for revenge.
Jimmi Simpson, who plays Dillard, explained his character’s transformation in an interview with Collider. He said Dillard had found peace living with his walker “family” in New York City and had forged a fragile bond with Negan. But Negan’s actions shattered Dillard and pushed him toward a deadly drive for revenge.
Dillard’s plan worked perfectly. He convinced Renata that Negan was dangerous, and she believed him because of her past trauma with the Croat, whom she still saw as Negan’s follower. But Maggie was more skeptical and started questioning Dillard’s story.
Dillard Takes Control of the Community
After killing Renata, Dillard did not stop there. He turned a group called the Dozen into his own personal army. He raided the armory, took control of the community’s food supplies, and held survivors inside the hospital.
Dillard also put his old NYPD uniform back on as he settled into his new position of power. The once-eccentric bartender who talked to walkers had become the season’s main antagonist.
Maggie and Negan managed to escape the bar during the fighting, with Hershel helping create an opening for them. But now they are on the outside, while Dillard controls everything inside.
Dillard gave Maggie an ultimatum: sacrifice Negan, or he will slaughter the rest of the community. His group started sealing the doors and windows of the room where people were gathered, with walkers seemingly loose in the area.
Maggie Defends Negan
One of the most important developments in Episode 7 was Maggie’s decision to defend Negan. For years, Maggie struggled with living alongside the man who killed her husband Glenn. But Season 3 has slowly pushed their relationship toward trust.
In “Hourglass,” Maggie became the person defending Negan when others wanted him dead. She refused to believe Dillard’s story without getting the full picture. When she spoke to Negan, his reaction made it clear he had no idea about the attack Dillard was talking about.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan continue to anchor the episode emotionally as Maggie wrestles with just how much trust she has finally placed in Negan.
What Critics Are Saying
The episode has received mixed reactions from critics. Some praised Jimmi Simpson’s performance, calling Dillard’s transformation genuinely unsettling. Simpson himself called Dillard’s ending “irreplaceable” and said it made complete sense to him once he saw how thoughtfully the writers’ room had built the arc.
Other critics were less impressed. One review argued that the sudden pivot to Dillard as the season’s big bad felt poorly set up, saying the development was “so dumb and poorly set up that I never bothered to even consider it”. The same review called the episode “laughably bad” and criticized the endless moral debates about whether Negan can live in polite society.
