Episode 2 World Premiere at Anime Expo 2026
The world premiere of The World Is Dancing Episode 2 takes place at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles. The screening is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 6:45 PM to 7:35 PM PST in Room 403AB at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
HIDIVE is hosting this special event as part of their panel at the convention. The screening is open to all badge holders. Along with the Episode 2 premiere, HIDIVE will also show an encore screening of Episode 1 during the same event.

What Happened in Episode 1
Episode 1 of The World Is Dancing is titled “Why Do People Dance?”. It introduces the main character Oniyasha, an 11-year-old boy living in 1374 during a time of war between the Northern and Southern Courts in Japan.
Oniyasha is the son of Kan’ami, the leader of a sarugaku theatre troupe. Sarugaku was a form of traditional Japanese performance that included dance and comedy. Even though he grows up surrounded by dance, Oniyasha does not understand why people dance. He finds no meaning in it and feels pressure from his strict father.
His father is hard on him, often criticizing his dancing and telling him he is “not formed to dance”. Oniyasha spends his days feeling lost and unmotivated, wondering about the purpose of dance. He sneaks away from practice whenever he can.
Everything changes when Oniyasha stumbles upon a Shirabyoshi dancer performing alone in a barn. A Shirabyoshi was a female dancer-performer from that era. For the first time, Oniyasha sees a dance that feels truly “good” to him. This moment sparks his curiosity and sets him on a path to discover the true meaning of dance.
The episode also shows the harsh realities of the time period. The landscape is marked by ruined homes and skeletons from recent wars. Oniyasha’s journey is not just about dance but also about finding his place in a troubled world.
The series is a fictionalized story about the real-life figure Zeami Motokiyo, who helped create Noh theater. Noh is a 600-year-old classical Japanese dance-drama form that is still performed today.
The Cast and Creative Team
The World Is Dancing features a talented voice cast. Yumiri Hanamori voices the main character Oniyasha. Other cast members include Simba Tsuchiya as Ishiya, Maaya Uchida as Kogane, Romi Park as Zojiro, and Katsuyuki Konishi as Kan’ami. Takahiro Sakurai voices the powerful shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Miyuki Sawashiro voices the Shirabyoshi dancer.

The production team includes Toshimasa Kuroyanagi as director. Keigo Sasaki handles character design. Sawako Kawamitsu writes the series composition and scripts. The animation comes from Cypic, the studio previously known as CygamesPictures.

Reijiro Tsumura, a Kanze-school Noh performer and Important Intangible Cultural Property holder, supervises the Noh choreography. Additional choreography comes from dancer Kaiji Moriyama, who directed the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Opening Ceremony, and choreographer Mikiko Kawamura.
Special Recognition and Fan Response
The World Is Dancing received a Special Award at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2026 (SSFF & ASIA) on May 1, 2026. The Short Shorts Film Festival is accredited by the Academy Awards and is the largest international short film festival in Asia.
The series is based on a manga by Kazuto Mihara that was serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine. The manga is six volumes long and has gained attention for its strong storytelling and timeless themes.
The anime adaptation has received a special tribute from legendary manga creator Takehiko Inoue, known for Slam Dunk and Vagabond. Inoue shared a congratulatory illustration of protagonist Oniyasha. The tribute is especially meaningful because The World Is Dancing creator Kazuto Mihara previously worked as one of Inoue’s manga assistants.
