Tom Holland revealed that in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Peter Parker ignores the crucial lesson he learned from Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in ‘No Way Home’—and it costs him dearly.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing to release one of its most personal and emotional Spider-Man stories yet. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026, and it brings with it a Peter Parker fans have never seen before. During a recent press conference for the film, Tom Holland opened up about his character’s journey and shared a surprising detail about how Peter disregards the wisdom he gained from Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man in ‘No Way Home.’
Holland explained that Peter Parker starts the movie at his lowest point. The world has forgotten who he is because of Doctor Strange’s spell at the end of ‘No Way Home.’ His girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, no longer remember him. Peter is completely alone, and instead of reaching out for help, he chooses to handle everything by himself. That decision, according to Holland, has serious consequences.
Peter Parker Ignores the One Lesson That Could Save Him
During the press conference, Holland spoke about the valuable lesson Peter learned from Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in the previous movie. Garfield’s character taught him that asking for help is actually a sign of courage, not weakness. But in ‘Brand New Day,’ Peter does the exact opposite.
“A lesson that he learned from Andrew’s character in the previous movie is that sometimes the bravest thing that you can do is ask for help. And he is actively ignoring that advice, and it is having a profound effect on his life as a human being.”
Holland made it clear that Peter’s choice to go it alone is making things worse. The character is suffering because he refuses to lean on anyone. The actor described the film as a warning about what happens when someone tries to live without a support system.
“To me, the thing I love the most about the film is that it really represents, or it’s a cautionary tale for the dangers of living a life alone and not having a community, not having friends.”
Spider-Man Thrives While Peter Parker Falls Apart
One of the most interesting parts of the movie is the contrast between Peter Parker’s personal life and his life as Spider-Man. Holland pointed out that while Peter is struggling, Spider-Man is actually doing better than ever.
“On the other side of that, as Spider-Man, he is thriving. We’re probably seeing the most truthful version of what Spider-Man means to New York City at the beginning of this movie.”
Peter Parker is isolated, lonely, and dealing with major changes to his body and powers. But Spider-Man is becoming the hero New York needs. The movie explores the tension between these two sides of the same person. Holland explained that balancing these worlds is one of the film’s main themes.
“The smashing of those two worlds is such a fun thing for us to play with. Standing on the world stage and beaming and doing all of this amazing stuff, and then coming home to a pretty grubby New York apartment.”
Holland also mentioned that Peter’s situation feels very real and relatable, especially for young people. He said the character’s struggles mirror what many people go through every day.
“It just felt so relatable, so prevalent with what’s happening in the world. And I love telling a movie on this scale that is something that I really think will resonate with young people.”
The Darkest Chapter of Peter Parker’s Life
Holland did not hold back when describing where Peter Parker is at the start of ‘Brand New Day.’ He called it the beginning of the darkest chapter of Peter’s life.
“I think you really meet Peter Parker at the beginning of the darkest chapter of his life.”
The film picks up a few years after the events of ‘No Way Home.’ Peter is living in anonymity and has devoted his entire life to protecting New York City as Spider-Man. But without his friends and loved ones, he is struggling to keep going. The movie shows what happens when a hero loses everyone who matters to them.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, known for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ describes the story as a more grounded adventure. Instead of facing world-ending threats, Peter deals with personal struggles and emotional pain.
New Challenges and New Powers
While Peter Parker is dealing with isolation, he also has to face physical changes. The movie shows Peter dealing with some kind of mutation in his DNA. He seeks help from Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner to control these changes. In the trailer, Peter is seen losing control and even destroying a police car.
“What is happening to me? I’m losing my mind. I am totally out of control, and I gotta fix whatever this is right now.”
Peter also develops a new ability—organic webbing. He will no longer need to rely on web-shooters. This change adds another layer to his struggles as he tries to understand what is happening to his body.
The film also introduces several new villains. Michael Mando plays Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III takes on the role of Tombstone. Jones previously voiced the character in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.’
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Makes His MCU Debut
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ marks the first time Jon Bernthal’s version of The Punisher appears in an MCU movie. Bernthal previously played the character in the Netflix series ‘Daredevil’ and his own spin-off show. Now, he brings Frank Castle to the big screen.
Bernthal spoke about how important it was to keep the character true to his roots, even in a PG-13 movie.
“I’m enormously protective of Frank and the Punisher fans and what he stands for. That was a real question for me.”
He added that he is grateful the filmmakers took the character seriously. He believes fans will still get what they want from The Punisher while respecting the tone of this movie.
Holland also talked about working with Bernthal. He said the contrast between Spider-Man and The Punisher created the perfect conflict for their scenes together.
“The way in which that conflict is resolved is so fulfilling, so satisfying.”
Zendaya and Jacob Batalon on Their Characters’ Journey
Zendaya and Jacob Batalon also shared insights about their characters in the new film. Since MJ and Ned no longer remember Peter, they are living completely different lives. But both actors said there is still a connection between them and Peter.
Batalon explained that Ned and MJ have good lives, but they feel like something is missing.
“Ned and MJ live really great lives, but I think there’s also like that sort of veil—they do feel like something’s kind of missing.”
He added that Ned’s “Spidey tracker” is his way of finding that missing link.
Zendaya noted that Peter and MJ’s personalities have switched in some ways.
“Now that he’s alone, he’s kind of adopted that negativity and she’s adopted his positivity without even knowing it. So there’s clearly something still there.”

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is Holland’s fourth solo film as the character. His previous outings include ‘Homecoming’ (2017), ‘Far From Home’ (2019), and ‘No Way Home’ (2021).
The cast also includes Sadie Sink, whose role remains a secret even as the release date gets closer. Florence Pugh is also set to appear as Yelena Belova.
