Yash’s upcoming film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has taken the box office by storm even before its release. The action drama, directed by Geetu Mohandas, opened its advance bookings on August 21 and crossed the ₹18 crore mark within just 48 hours. The film has sold over 4.7 lakh tickets across India, with the Kannada version alone contributing around ₹10 crore.
The advance booking numbers place Toxic ahead of several major Hindi blockbusters. During its first 24 hours, the film sold nearly 2.5 lakh tickets, surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (1.5 lakh), Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 (1.3 lakh), and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal (55,000). The Hindi version of Toxic alone sold around 60,000 tickets in its first 24 hours, beating Animal’s overall advance ticket count during the same period.
By August 24, the film’s advance booking gross including blocked seats had surged past ₹32 crore, with over 6 lakh tickets sold across India. The film is scheduled for a worldwide release on August 26 across approximately 12,000 screens.
Kannada and Hindi Markets Lead the Charge
Karnataka, Yash’s home state, is driving the advance bookings. The state has recorded over ₹15 crore in advance sales, with Bengaluru contributing nearly ₹9.64 crore. The Kannada 2D version leads the language-wise bookings with ₹11.40 crore, while premium formats like Kannada IMAX and 4DX have added another ₹94 lakh.
The Hindi version is also performing strongly, crossing ₹11 crore in pre-sales. The Hindi 2D version has brought in ₹11.06 crore, making it the biggest contributor in the table. Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Pune are seeing heavy demand, with some theatres in Mumbai adding early morning shows as early as 6:00 AM and late-night screenings till 11:59 PM. Ticket prices have surged at premium properties, with the most expensive tickets reportedly going for as much as ₹2,250 in parts of Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Yash Responds to Criticism Over Women Characters
The film has been in the news for its trailer, which sparked criticism for its portrayal of women characters. At the pre-release event on August 22, Yash addressed the controversy directly.
“Society… they may say, they may not accept it but the point is everybody will look upon you. I am not respected for my money, I am respected for my work, and I know the director will prove that every woman and every girl can face every kind of situation, express their thoughts, express their vision and succeed in this society.”
He further urged women to watch the film, saying:
“There’s a voice for women in this film, unlike how it is coming across in the trailer. Watch the movie and enjoy. All you girls, you will have a blast.”
The film has been cleared by the CBFC with no cuts and has received an A-rating.
Star Cast and Storyline
Toxic marks Yash’s return to the big screen after nearly four years, following the massive success of KGF: Chapter 2. The actor plays a dual role as Raya and Ticket. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth in key roles.
